Orient Cables IPO: Growth Prospects and Risks for Investors
Orient Cables, a prominent player in India's networking and specialty cable manufacturing sector, is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) to raise funds for expansion and debt repayment. The company plans to generate ₹320 crore through a fresh equity issuance and an additional ₹232 crore via an offer for sale, totaling ₹552 crore. Following the IPO, the promoters’ stake will reduce from full ownership to 82.2%, signaling a partial dilution of control.
Founded in 2005, Orient Cables caters to a diverse clientele spanning telecom, smart-building automation, data centers, renewable energy, automotive, and other industrial applications. Networking cables contributed 78% of the company’s revenue in fiscal year 2026 (FY26). With a significant market share of 22.9% during FY26, Orient Cables ranks among the top four networking cable manufacturers in India. The firm operates manufacturing facilities in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and Bengaluru, with the latter starting production in May 2026.
Financially, the company has posted strong revenue growth, with sales rising 33.5% annually from ₹657.8 crore in FY24 to ₹1,171.7 crore in FY26. Net profit increased to ₹53.8 crore in FY26 from ₹40.1 crore two years earlier. However, the operating margin before depreciation and amortization (EBITDA margin) declined slightly to 8.2% in FY26 from 8.9% in FY24, primarily due to increased raw material costs. Despite this dip, the margin remains within the peer range of 6.1% to 13.9%.
Return on equity (ROE) decreased from 37.3% in FY24 to 25.8% in FY26 but still exceeds the industry peer range of 13.7% to 24.6%. On the debt front, borrowings surged to ₹234.2 crore in FY26 from ₹36.7 crore in FY24, driven by the need for higher working capital to support sales growth and capacity expansion. The net debt-to-equity ratio climbed to 0.9 from 0.2, placing it above the typical peer range of 0.03 to 0.5. Operating cash flow turned negative at ₹26.6 crore in FY26, a reversal from positive ₹42.2 crore in FY24, reflecting a strategic increase in inventory to match business expansion.
Despite its growth trajectory, Orient Cables faces some challenges that investors should consider. The company experiences customer concentration risk, with its top 10 customers accounting for approximately 75% of total revenue. This dependence could impact stability if key clients reduce orders or switch suppliers. Additionally, Orient Cables is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the CK Birla group-promoted Orient Electric over the use of the 'ORIENT' brand for wires and cables. This ongoing litigation adds uncertainty to the stock until resolved.
Valuation for the IPO is set at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 57.5 based on FY26 earnings at the upper price band. This places Orient Cables at a premium compared to some competitors such as Finolex Cables (31.7), Havells India (40.5), and Polycab India (46.8), but roughly in line with RR Kabel, which trades at 58.2. Investors will need to weigh whether the company’s growth prospects justify this valuation premium.
The cable manufacturing industry in India plays a crucial role in supporting various sectors, including telecommunications and renewable energy, which are poised for expansion amid increasing digital infrastructure needs and government initiatives. As demand for networking and specialty cables grows, companies like Orient Cables stand to benefit from increasing market opportunities. However, margins remain under pressure from raw material price fluctuations and intense competition.
Given these factors, potential investors may adopt a cautious approach, monitoring the company’s post-IPO financial performance and progress in resolving the brand-related legal dispute. While Orient Cables shows promising revenue growth and market positioning, risks related to profitability, customer concentration, and litigation create an environment that suits investors with a higher risk appetite.
In summary, the Orient Cables IPO offers a chance to participate in a growing segment of the Indian cable industry. Its plans to expand capacity and reduce debt could support longer-term growth. Yet, investors should carefully consider the financial and legal challenges before committing capital to this issue.
