Sensex Jumps 531 Points, Nifty Holds Above 22,800; Adani Ports Gains 6%
On Thursday, India’s benchmark stock indices climbed higher, reflecting positive momentum in key sectors such as FMCG and public sector banks. By early afternoon, the Sensex had surged 531 points or 0.73 percent, reaching 73,777. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 index advanced 136 points, or 0.60 percent, standing firm above the 22,800 mark at 22,835.
The rally was led by the Nifty FMCG index, which gained 1.6 percent, followed closely by the Nifty PSU Bank index that rose 1.3 percent. These sectors are traditionally considered defensive and often attract investor interest amid market fluctuations. Conversely, the Nifty Auto index bucked the general trend and slipped 0.40 percent, showing some sector-specific weakness during the session.
The broader market also showed resilience, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices posting gains of over 0.40 percent each. This broad participation suggests underlying strength beyond the headline indices, often seen as a positive indicator for market breadth.
Among individual stocks, Adani Ports experienced a notable jump, climbing 6 percent, contributing significantly to the overall market gains. On the downside, eClerx Services shares tumbled nearly 13 percent during intraday trading, following the company’s quarterly earnings report released after market hours on Wednesday. The sharp decline in eClerx shares highlights how earnings results can impact investor sentiment and stock prices swiftly.
Market participants are also closely watching central bank policies worldwide. Ankita Pathak, Head of Global Investments at Ionic Asset, commented on recent developments, noting that the US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady in its latest meeting, signaling a cautious, data-driven approach. She suggested that a rate hike in December 2026 remains probable, aligning with previous policy projections. Additionally, upcoming policy decisions from the European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are expected to maintain current rates. However, any unexpected hawkish moves by these institutions could influence currency markets and add volatility ahead of the US midterm elections on November 3, 2026.
Domestically, the Reserve Bank of India appears poised to continue its tightening stance, potentially raising rates further to manage inflation and support the Indian Rupee against depreciation pressures. This environment of cautious monetary policy is shaping investor strategies in the Indian equity market.
Other market highlights include Maruti Suzuki India Ltd announcing that its cumulative electric vehicle exports have surpassed 50,000 units since global shipments began in August 2025. Maruti Suzuki’s electric exports accounted for nearly 93 percent of India’s total electric passenger vehicle exports between April and September 2026, underscoring the company’s growing role in the nation’s EV sector.
In the IPO space, Bombay Coated & Special Steels Ltd opened its subscription on Thursday. Brokerage firm Anand Rathi assigned a “Subscribe – Long Term” rating to the public offering, citing the company’s solid growth path, strong customer base, and favorable industry conditions as key positives.
Aeroflex Industries shares also drew attention, surging 18 percent to ₹579 in intraday trading on the BSE. This jump followed a robust Q2FY27 earnings report, with profit after tax soaring 156.9 percent year-on-year to ₹36.6 crore. The company achieved its highest quarterly revenue to date, crossing ₹200 crore for the first time, signaling strong operational performance and investor confidence.
The market’s overall positive trend on Thursday reflects a mix of sectoral strength, corporate earnings, and cautious optimism around monetary policies globally and locally. Investors remain attentive to upcoming economic data and policy announcements that could influence market direction in the weeks ahead.
