Shares of Jio Platforms, the digital services arm of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), made a notable debut on the Indian stock exchanges, listing at a significant premium to their issue price. On the day of listing, the stock opened at ₹1,358 on both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), representing a 21.36 percent premium over the initial offer price of ₹1,119.

This strong listing pushed Jio Platforms' market capitalization to approximately ₹12.5 trillion, positioning it as the second most valuable publicly traded company in India. It trails only behind its parent company, Reliance Industries Limited, which holds a market cap of around ₹16.15 trillion. Bharti Airtel, a key competitor in the telecom space, ranks third with a market capitalization near ₹12.18 trillion according to BSE data.

The listing event was marked by the presence of key members of the Ambani family, including Akash Ambani, the Managing Director of Jio Platforms, and Isha Ambani, who serves as a non-executive director. Their attendance underscored the strategic importance of this milestone for the conglomerate and its ambitions in the digital sector.

Jio Platforms’ initial public offering (IPO), which closed on October 21, was met with overwhelming investor interest. The ₹30,213 crore offering was fully subscribed within just 100 minutes of opening. Overall, the issue was subscribed 22.19 times, driven largely by institutional investors. Data from NSE reveals that bids were placed for over 438 billion shares against the 19.75 crore shares on offer.

Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) showed the strongest appetite, with their portion oversubscribed 70.55 times. They bid for approximately 345.75 billion shares, far exceeding the 49.01 crore shares allotted to this category. Non-institutional investors subscribed 14.09 times, while retail investors placed bids 2.72 times greater than the shares reserved for them. Employee and shareholder categories saw subscription rates of 2.93 times and 7.60 times, respectively.

Prior to the public offering, Jio Platforms secured commitments from 212 anchor investors who collectively acquired shares worth ₹8,109.85 crore at the top end of the price band. Institutional demand for the anchor book was exceptionally high, exceeding ₹2.5 trillion, which is more than 30 times the available shares for this category.

This IPO also set a global record by becoming the first public offering worldwide to receive over 10 million applications, surpassing the prior record held by Waaree Energies with approximately 9.7 million applications. The entire issue comprised fresh shares, and the capital raised will be used partly to reduce debt at Jio’s telecom subsidiary, with the balance allocated for general corporate needs.

Jio Platforms has rapidly evolved since Reliance Industries entered the telecommunications market about ten years ago. It now stands as one of the largest mobile operators globally by subscriber numbers. Besides mobile connectivity, the company has expanded into broadband services, digital entertainment, cloud computing, and enterprise solutions. This diversification aligns with Reliance’s broader strategy to become a key player in India’s digital economy.

According to company figures, Jio Platforms had approximately 533.3 million subscribers as of June 2026 and handled nearly 60 percent of the country’s total data traffic. Despite the public listing, Reliance Industries continues to hold a majority stake in Jio Platforms, maintaining control over the company’s strategic direction.

The successful IPO and listing of Jio Platforms highlight the strength of India’s growing digital market and investor confidence in companies driving innovation and connectivity. As Jio continues to grow, its influence over the Indian telecom and digital landscape is expected to deepen further.
