Robinhood is widening its platform capabilities to better serve active traders who want access to markets outside the standard U.S. stock exchange hours. The company revealed a series of updates on Tuesday evening at its HOOD Summit in Houston, Texas, including the introduction of weekend trading hours, new cryptocurrency perpetual futures, and AI-driven automated trading tools.

Since its inception, Robinhood has been known for pioneering commission-free stock trades, but these latest moves highlight its transition toward a more versatile trading platform aimed at users who engage in frequent and varied market activities. By extending hours and adding new products, Robinhood aims to compete more directly with crypto-focused platforms like Coinbase, which has broadened its offerings to include derivatives and other financial products, as well as traditional brokerages such as Charles Schwab, which recently launched 24/7 trading for selected cryptocurrency futures on its thinkorswim platform.

The competitive landscape in retail brokerage is shifting. While low fees remain important, the focus is increasingly on providing greater market access, faster execution, and more sophisticated tools such as automation to attract and retain traders who want to operate around the clock across multiple asset classes.

Following the announcement, Robinhood’s stock price saw little movement on Wednesday. The company’s CEO, Vlad Tenev, emphasized the importance of traders to markets, stating, "Ownership doesn't work without markets, and markets don't work without traders." He added, "We're making Robinhood the best place in the world for active traders by delivering tools once reserved for hedge funds, big banks, and quant firms."

Beginning next year, users will be able to trade select U.S. equities 24 hours a day, seven days a week, effectively expanding on the 24/5 trading window the company introduced earlier in 2023. Currently, Robinhood offers extended trading from Sunday at 8:00 PM Eastern Time through Friday at 8:00 PM ET, but the new schedule will also include weekend sessions.

In addition to lengthening trading hours, Robinhood unveiled AI-powered trading agents designed to automate parts of the trading process. This feature builds on the agentic trading concept the company launched earlier this year, allowing users to create personalized AI agents that can execute strategies continuously. This automation aims to help traders implement more complex, around-the-clock approaches without constant manual input.

Speaking with CNBC’s "Squawk Box," Tenev reflected on how electronic trading has evolved over the past two decades, noting that algorithmic trading now accounts for a large portion of market volume. However, he also pointed out that human trading strategies remain essential, stating, "I don't think that'll ever be 100%" automated. He sees new asset classes and technologies like AI tools as opening fresh opportunities for traders to compete and innovate.

Robinhood also announced plans to add crypto perpetual futures contracts to its app. These financial instruments provide leveraged exposure to cryptocurrencies without requiring users to hold the underlying assets, appealing to traders looking for more advanced crypto trading options.

These developments come as part of a broader trend among brokerages to expand beyond basic stock trading. By introducing longer hours, AI-driven tools, and derivative products, Robinhood is positioning itself as a more comprehensive platform that addresses the needs of active traders who demand flexibility and innovation. As retail investors become more sophisticated and markets continue to evolve, platforms like Robinhood are adapting to offer the speed, access, and technology that modern traders expect.
