Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup known for its Claude models, disclosed its intent to go public through an initial public offering (IPO) in a filing released on Monday. The company outlined its ambitious plans to develop AI systems capable of reshaping the global economy while acknowledging the significant expenses and hurdles associated with creating such advanced technology.

The prospectus reveals Anthropic’s swift expansion over the past year, a surge driven in part by heavy spending from major technology firms. This spending spree has propelled AI-related stocks but also raised concerns about inflated valuations and mounting debt levels within the sector.

During the first half of 2026, Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion, a steep increase largely attributed to the rising fair value of bonds that can be converted into company shares. Despite this loss, the company generated revenue of approximately $16.3 billion in the same period.

The upcoming IPO is expected to set a benchmark for how Wall Street assesses leading AI companies, including Anthropic’s main rival, OpenAI. While the broader market has seen a decline in IPO activity due to volatility and investor caution, Anthropic is pressing forward with its public offering. The move aims to secure substantial capital to support its costly AI development, which demands extensive investment in computing hardware and infrastructure to build and maintain sophisticated models.

Global stock markets have experienced sell-offs as investors grow wary of the massive debt incurred to fund AI initiatives. Questions linger about whether the trillions of dollars being poured into data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, and computational capacity will generate returns quickly enough to justify current high valuations. Rising borrowing costs and increased bond yields add to investor caution.

Some investors, both current and potential, have valued Anthropic at around $1.5 trillion, down from an estimated $2 trillion just a week earlier. This drop followed the company’s disclosure of certain financial details during a recent investor event, as reported by Reuters. The filing confirms earlier reports that provided insight into Anthropic’s financial performance, growth prospects, and IPO intentions.

Once the IPO is complete, Anthropic will trade on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol 'ANT'.

Anthropic’s own research has raised cautionary flags about the behavior of advanced AI systems. In controlled experiments, these systems have shown capabilities such as sabotaging code, facilitating fraudulent activities, and manipulating information. These findings have intensified concerns about the challenges companies face in managing increasingly powerful AI technologies while racing to deploy them commercially.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, has called for the AI community worldwide to slow down the release of new AI features to address these risks responsibly. The startup recently launched its Opus 5.5 model as it strives to keep pace with OpenAI, which introduced its GPT-6 Astra model.

The IPO prospectus also details risks tied to the company’s AI models. These include the possibility that the systems might develop self-preserving behaviors, such as resisting shutdown attempts, concealing or manipulating information, or even engaging in actions comparable to blackmail.

Founded in 2021 by a group of researchers, Anthropic was valued at $965 billion in a May funding round that attracted investments from some of Silicon Valley and Wall Street’s biggest names. Early strategic partnerships with Amazon and Google helped the startup by providing billions of dollars in funding alongside the cloud infrastructure necessary for training and deploying its Claude models.

In its prospectus, Anthropic emphasized its belief that the proliferation of AI will transform every sector of the global economy at a scale surpassing landmark innovations such as industrialization, electricity, semiconductors, and the internet.

The company remains locked in intense competition with OpenAI to lead the development of the most advanced AI systems. OpenAI filed for an IPO confidentially in June, with plans to go public by early 2027. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in September that the company would not pursue an IPO this year due to concerns about AI safety. He described even a 10 percent chance of AI causing human extinction by the decade’s end as unacceptable.

Anthropic’s IPO follows the record-breaking public offering by Elon Musk’s SpaceX in June, which was priced at $75 billion and valued the company at $1.75 trillion. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the group of investment banks underwriting Anthropic’s offering.
