The National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India is intensifying its efforts to secure its network against increasing cyber threats fueled by artificial intelligence (AI). Ashish Kumar Chauhan, the NSE's managing director and chief executive officer, highlighted the urgent need for all stockbrokers to enhance their cybersecurity measures during his address at the annual capital market convention organized by the Association of NSE Members of India (Anmi) on Saturday.

Chauhan emphasized that every participant in the trading ecosystem must prioritize cybersecurity to preserve the integrity of the trading framework across the country. "Every member has to now take that out as a main function to ensure that integrity of our trading framework across India, across all members is maintained," he stated. This underscores the exchange's commitment to safeguarding market stability amid evolving digital threats.

As technology becomes deeply embedded in capital market operations, vulnerabilities have started to emerge with greater frequency. Chauhan warned that this trend is expected to continue, especially as AI capabilities advance. To address these challenges, he proposed the formation of a dedicated task force within the industry association. This group would focus on identifying risks, coordinating timely responses, and providing support to market participants for mitigating cybersecurity threats.

The NSE is not limiting its role to policy suggestions alone. Chauhan indicated that the exchange plans to offer practical assistance to brokers through workshops and other educational initiatives. Additionally, the NSE intends to collaborate closely with regulatory bodies to ensure that members can strengthen their security infrastructures effectively. For brokers lacking in-house technical expertise, Chauhan recommended building such capabilities or consulting external specialists to fortify defenses.

Highlighting recent incidents of AI-powered cyberattacks, Chauhan noted that failures by individual members to address security gaps could compromise the entire market network. This interdependency means that one weak link can pose risks to the broader ecosystem, making collective diligence essential. Beyond the immediate AI threat, Chauhan also raised awareness about longer-term challenges such as quantum computing. Quantum technologies could disrupt current cryptographic systems, which underpin secure communications in financial markets.

Preparing for these emerging risks requires proactive measures from all involved in the financial sector. Chauhan urged market participants to remain vigilant and adapt to new security demands as technology and cyber threats evolve. "Technology has remained central to the functioning of capital markets since NSE’s early years, but market participants cannot afford to fall behind as threats evolve," he remarked.

The NSE plans to continue collaborating with industry bodies and regulators to help the market ecosystem manage these cybersecurity challenges. Maintaining trust in capital markets depends on coordinated efforts among exchanges, brokers, and other institutions to uphold rigorous security standards. Chauhan's remarks highlight the critical role of cybersecurity in preserving market confidence and protecting against sophisticated cyber risks fueled by AI and future technologies.

As financial markets increasingly rely on digital infrastructure, the need for enhanced cybersecurity protocols becomes more urgent. The NSE's proactive approach serves as a reminder that vigilance and cooperation are key to defending against the growing complexity of cyber threats. Brokers and market participants who invest in robust security practices will contribute to a safer trading environment and help sustain the integrity of India's capital markets.
