Since its inception in May 2021, the Parag Parikh Conservative Hybrid Fund (PCHF) has stood out in the conservative hybrid fund category by delivering consistent and commendable returns. Over the past five years, the fund has achieved a compounded annualized return of 8.4 percent, outperforming the category average of 6.1 percent.

Conservative hybrid funds typically allocate between 75 to 90 percent of their assets to debt instruments, with the remaining 10 to 25 percent invested in equities. This mix appeals to investors seeking a lower risk profile but who still want some exposure to equity markets. It is particularly suitable for senior citizens and younger investors aiming to diversify portfolios that are heavily weighted towards equities.

A Balanced Three-Part Portfolio

The Parag Parikh Conservative Hybrid Fund manages a portfolio valued at approximately ₹3,454 crore. Its holdings are broadly divided into three segments: debt, equities, and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). Currently, the fund maintains about 10 to 12 percent exposure each to equities and REITs, with the remaining portion invested in debt securities.

Over the last five years, the fund has maintained its equity allocation between 9 and 16 percent. This conservative approach places it among only three funds in its category that consistently hold a lower equity stake, alongside peers from Nippon India Mutual Fund and Bandhan Mutual Fund.

The equity selection strategy within PCHF differs markedly from the fund house’s pure equity schemes. Prioritizing capital preservation and steady cash flow, the equity portfolio leans towards low-beta stocks with lower volatility. The focus is on companies with strong cash flow generation, high dividend yields, and share buyback potential. Current prominent holdings include ITC, Power Grid, Coal India, and Petronet LNG.

The portfolio does not adhere to a strict market capitalization framework, but its preference for established, cash-generative firms naturally results in a large-cap bias. Mid- and small-cap stocks are included selectively if they meet the fund’s stringent criteria. Presently, large-cap stocks make up roughly 7 percent of the portfolio, mid-caps 2 percent, and small-caps 1 percent.

Stock selection follows a bottom-up approach rather than a sector-focused one, and the fund avoids structural overweights or underweights in any specific industry. While this conservative stance on low-beta, high-dividend stocks might limit upside potential during strong bull markets, it also helps cushion the portfolio against sharp market downturns.

Significant Allocation to REITs

A notable feature that sets PCHF apart from its peers is its meaningful investment in REITs, accounting for about 12 percent of the portfolio. It is the only fund in its category with such a substantial REIT allocation. The fund house views Grade-A commercial real estate in major metropolitan areas as an attractive investment due to favorable supply and demand dynamics. Limited new supply coupled with steady demand supports high occupancy and allows REITs to raise rents faster than inflation.

The fund estimates that REITs provide distribution yields between 6 and 6.5 percent, alongside potential capital appreciation and rental escalations. Unlike its REIT investments, PCHF currently avoids Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), which the fund house considers less appealing at this time.

Conservative Debt Portfolio

The debt segment of the fund is managed with a highly conservative approach. The fund does not invest in securities rated below AAA. Its debt holdings primarily include sovereign securities, State Development Loans (SDLs), and select AAA-rated corporate bonds.

Credit quality is further reinforced by internal credit assessments conducted by the fund house. Out of approximately 50 to 60 AAA-rated companies available for investment, only around 32 have met the internal approval standards. This adds an extra layer of scrutiny to credit risk management. Key corporate bond issuers in the portfolio include NABARD, Bajaj Finance, LIC Housing Finance, and SIDBI.

The sovereign exposure mainly consists of SDLs, with the fund comparing their spreads to corporate bond yields to find better relative value. Corporate bonds in the portfolio generally have shorter maturities of one to two years, whereas SDLs may extend to three to five years, with the maximum maturity capped at six years.

As of September 2026, the portfolio composition was approximately 52 percent government securities, 22 percent corporate debt, 12 percent REITs, 10 percent equities, and 4 percent cash equivalents. The average portfolio maturity is maintained between three to five years.

Performance and Expense Ratio

In recent times, the fund’s conservative positioning has helped limit downside risk amid market volatility. Its focus on low-beta, dividend-paying companies and early adoption of REIT investments have both contributed positively to performance. The fund manager notes that most listed REITs in the portfolio have delivered compound annual growth rates of 12 to 15 percent, including distributions.

Over the last five years, the fund’s average three-year rolling returns have been around 11 percent CAGR, compared to 8.5 percent for the broader category. These returns have fluctuated between 8.3 and 12.7 percent during this period. The debt portfolio’s yield to maturity stood at 7.7 percent as of September 2026, slightly above the category average of 7.5 percent.

One of the fund’s advantages is its low expense ratio. The regular plan’s base expense ratio is 0.54 percent, far below the category average of 1.5 percent. The direct plan is even more cost-efficient, charging 0.24 percent against the category’s 0.79 percent average.

In sum, the Parag Parikh Conservative Hybrid Fund is designed for investors seeking moderate growth with controlled risk through a judicious blend of debt, equities, and real estate assets. Its disciplined investment approach and cost efficiency have contributed to its strong track record within the conservative hybrid fund space.
