Sensex and Nifty Expected to Open Lower Amid Q2 Earnings and Fed Watch
Indian stock markets are set for a cautious start on Wednesday as investors digest a mix of corporate earnings and await the US Federal Reserve's policy announcement later in the day. The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open lower, reflecting investor uncertainty amid elevated crude oil prices and a busy earnings calendar.
The Sensex closed marginally down by 8.08 points at 73,598.67 on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after fluctuating between a high of 73,762.98 and a low of 73,179.41 during the session. Similarly, the Nifty 50 ended slightly lower at 22,749.75, down 3.45 points. These minor declines masked a divided market performance, with IT stocks pressured by Infosys, which dropped over 1.4% following a lowered revenue forecast for fiscal year 2027. Conversely, small-cap stocks experienced a surge of 2.69%, highlighting sector-specific investor interest.
The banking sector notably underperformed, with the Bank Nifty index falling by 391.80 points or 0.72% to close at 53,974.90. Private-sector banks bore the brunt of the losses, contributing to the cautious tone. Meanwhile, the India VIX, a measure of market volatility, decreased by 4.4% to 16.53, indicating a dip in market fear or uncertainty.
Crude oil prices remain a key factor influencing market sentiment. On Tuesday, oil prices climbed 1.6% to $115.70 per barrel following an attack on a refinery in Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s top oil exporters. This incident has raised concerns about potential supply disruptions and the risk of higher inflation, which could weigh on economic growth and corporate margins.
India’s average crude oil import price has also crossed the $120 mark for the first time in over a decade. The Indian crude basket price averaged $120.46 per barrel in October up to the 26th, a rise of nearly 4% month-on-month from $116.77 in September and a significant jump from $90.19 in August. This is the highest monthly average since March 2012, underscoring the impact of geopolitical tensions in West Asia on energy costs.
Wednesday’s market activity will be influenced heavily by quarterly results from major corporations. Companies scheduled to report their September quarter earnings include Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), Adani Ports & SEZ, Adani Enterprises, Hyundai Motors India, Vedanta, TVS Motor, and Hero MotoCorp. Their performance is expected to guide sector trends and stock-specific movements.
Notably, software giant Infosys has already released its outlook, which has weighed on the IT index. Other companies such as MIDHANI, Subros, Exide, and Choice International are also in focus after recent global deals and partnerships boosted investor interest.
On the global front, SK Hynix, a major memory chip manufacturer, reported a sevenfold increase in profits for the September quarter, resulting in plans to return $45 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. The company highlighted ongoing shortages in components essential for AI infrastructure, supporting sustained demand and prices in the semiconductor market through 2030.
Gold prices have edged slightly higher ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s decision, with spot gold trading around $4,061.86 per ounce, following a 1% rise the previous day. The Fed is widely expected to maintain current interest rates, a factor that typically influences precious metals and currency markets.
Market watchers are also keeping an eye on India’s fintech sector, which faces uncertainty around merchant discount rates and volatile equity markets. This has complicated plans for an IPO pipeline estimated at over ₹33,600 crore, including companies like PhonePe, Razorpay, and Navi, which are reassessing their timing and valuations in light of market conditions.
Meanwhile, upcoming listings such as Jio’s anticipated trading debut following a record $3.2 billion IPO are generating significant interest, with grey-market premiums suggesting potential gains of about 22%.
In the mutual fund space, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund has launched a new BSE Power ETF, providing investors exposure to India’s power sector. The new fund offer remains open until October 30.
Overall, markets on Wednesday will likely navigate a complex mix of corporate earnings, geopolitical risks, and policy developments. Investors will be closely watching the US Federal Reserve’s stance on interest rates and economic outlook, as these factors will influence global liquidity and capital flows impacting Indian equities.
