Maruti Suzuki Supports Industry Call to Postpone BS-VII Emission Norms

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, one of the country's leading automobile manufacturers, has expressed its agreement with the automotive industry's collective appeal to postpone the implementation of Bharat Stage-VII (BS-VII) emission standards. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), emphasized the importance of engaging in comprehensive discussions with the government regarding the long-term implications of these regulations on the automotive sector.

During a post-earnings conference call, Takeuchi stated that the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), representing the industry's interests, is currently consulting with government authorities to review the proposed BS-VII rules. He highlighted that the new standards are expected to influence vehicle pricing once enacted, and it is critical to develop a roadmap that balances environmental goals with industry sustainability and economic feasibility.

"BS-VII norms are under active consideration within SIAM, and we are working closely with the government as an industry collective," Takeuchi explained. "Understanding the potential impact on pricing and market dynamics is essential before finalizing the implementation timeline. Our objective is to establish regulations that support both the nation's environmental targets and the automotive sector's health."

Takeuchi also acknowledged the positive sales performance of Maruti Suzuki amid these regulatory discussions. Despite the high sales base set last year following the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms in September 2025, the company continues to maintain growth momentum. He expressed optimism about the near future, suggesting that the company is well-positioned to capitalize on market opportunities while adapting to evolving regulations.

Recent reports indicate that SIAM has formally requested the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to defer the introduction of new brake and tyre requirements from April 2031 to April 2035. This request follows feedback from tyre and brake component suppliers who have raised concerns about the feasibility of meeting the original deadline.

The draft BS-VII rules, released by MoRTH on October 12, 2026, propose stricter controls on tyre abrasion and brake particle emissions for passenger vehicles starting in April 2031. The ministry envisions a phased rollout over six years, with staggered implementation dates in April 2029, April 2031, and April 2035. These measures aim to further reduce vehicular pollution and improve air quality nationwide.

The push for BS-VII emissions standards follows India's progressive tightening of vehicular pollution norms over the past decades. The Bharat Stage emission standards, inspired by European regulations, have evolved from BS-I to BS-VI, with each stage imposing more rigorous limits on pollutants like nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and hydrocarbons. The upcoming BS-VII regulations are expected to introduce new technical requirements targeting brake and tyre wear particles, which contribute to environmental degradation.

Maruti Suzuki's alignment with industry peers reflects a cautious approach to regulatory changes that could significantly affect manufacturing costs and vehicle prices. The company’s leadership stresses the need for collaboration between manufacturers, suppliers, and regulators to devise policies that are both environmentally responsible and economically viable.

As the automotive sector transitions towards cleaner technologies and stricter emission controls, balancing innovation with affordability remains a key challenge. Initiatives like electric vehicle adoption, alternative fuels, and advanced emission control systems are part of the broader strategy to reduce pollution levels while sustaining industry growth.

With ongoing consultations between SIAM and the government, the final decision on the BS-VII timeline is expected soon. Maruti Suzuki’s continued sales strength provides a stable foundation as the company prepares to navigate future regulatory landscapes and market demands.
