Wabtec Secures $94M Contract for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains, Expands India Hub

Wabtec Corporation, a prominent American rail equipment manufacturer, is advancing India's role as a key global center for rail manufacturing and engineering. The company announced on Tuesday that it secured contracts worth approximately $94 million (₹839 crore) from Indian Railways to support the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train initiative.

Pascal Schweitzer, President of Wabtec Transit, explained to Business Standard that the company aims to serve both domestic and international markets, including Europe and the United States, by leveraging India’s growing manufacturing capabilities. This move aligns with Wabtec’s broader strategy to develop India not only as a local market supplier but also as a global export hub for rail components.

The agreements will enable the Indian Railways to enhance service reliability, simplify maintenance processes, and improve passenger safety across the new sleeper train fleet. Wabtec’s role involves supplying vital onboard systems such as brake mechanisms, door assemblies, and gangway solutions. Beyond delivery, the company will provide integration support, conduct testing and commissioning, and offer long-term operational reliability services to meet Indian Railways’ stringent performance standards.

Schweitzer emphasized the significance of these orders, stating, "These contracts reinforce Wabtec's commitment to modernizing Indian Railways. Our local manufacturing strength and advanced technology have positioned us well to meet the demanding requirements of a large-scale rail project. We are dedicated to delivering these systems on time and supporting the launch of the next generation of sleeper rail travel in India."

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a flagship manufacturing unit of Indian Railways, is responsible for producing 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets. Each 24-coach train is designed to elevate passenger comfort, safety, and convenience, catering to the increasing demand for efficient long-distance rail travel across India.

Considered one of the most ambitious rail modernization efforts in the country, the Vande Bharat Sleeper program requires close cooperation between Indian Railways, ICF, system suppliers like Wabtec, and other stakeholders. This collaboration ensures smooth manufacturing, system integration, operational readiness, and sustained performance of the fleet over time.

Wabtec’s involvement marks a key milestone in its business development within India. The contracts not only strengthen partnerships with prominent rail car manufacturers and system integrators but also reinforce the company’s dedication to enhancing rail transportation through innovation and local expertise.

Schweitzer shared that Wabtec is actively cultivating India as a center of excellence for both engineering and manufacturing. The company plans to export components produced in India to markets such as Europe and the United States. The approach focuses on serving the domestic market through local partnerships with Indian Railways, metro operators, and private players for projects including the Vande Bharat Sleeper and Chennai Metro Phase 2.

Looking ahead, Wabtec intends to participate vigorously in upcoming high-speed rail corridor projects in India. The company has already achieved an estimated 80 to 90 percent localization rate in its product line, demonstrating its commitment to indigenous manufacturing.

Drawing on its global experience with high-speed rail networks in countries like France (SNCF), Germany (Deutsche Bahn), Italy (Trenitalia), the UK, and China, Wabtec is well-positioned to compete for future rapid transit projects in India. This expansion promises to bolster India’s stature in the global rail sector while supporting the country’s growing transportation infrastructure needs.
