The Indian stock market experienced a subdued trading session on Tuesday, with the benchmark Sensex declining by about 300 points and the Nifty 50 index remaining flat below the 22,700 mark. Investors grappled with uneven sector performances, as Information Technology and Oil & Gas stocks emerged among the largest laggards, contributing to the overall market softness.

Despite a tentative start, the Sensex managed to recover slightly from its opening lows but still closed down approximately 50 points, settling near 22,757. The broader market mirrored this cautious mood, reflecting investor uncertainty amid mixed earnings reports and economic signals.

One notable exception in the market was Acutaas Chemicals, whose shares surged 13 percent to reach a record intraday high of ₹3,797 on the National Stock Exchange. This jump came after the company released robust results for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2027 (Q2FY27), signaling strong operational performance despite a generally tepid market atmosphere.

In the public sector arena, Coal India Ltd, the state-run coal mining company, announced a significant increase in its capital expenditure. During the first half of the current financial year (April to September 2026), Coal India’s capex rose by 27 percent to ₹7,996 crore, up from ₹6,283 crore during the same period last year. This uptick reflects the company’s ongoing investments aimed at boosting coal production and infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, precious metal Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), including gold and silver ETFs, faced downward pressure. These funds fell by up to 2 percent, tracking declines in international gold and silver prices. The movement in these assets underscores the sensitivity of commodity-linked investments to global market trends and currency fluctuations.

Adding to the economic discourse, former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan advised against excessive intervention to defend the rupee’s value. In an interview with Reuters, Rajan emphasized that India should avoid fixating on a specific currency level or depleting its foreign exchange reserves to maintain the rupee, suggesting a more flexible approach to exchange rate management.

On the corporate front, Meta Platforms announced an increase in its largest-ever equity fundraising to $97.5 billion. The social media and technology giant is channeling these funds to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure, signaling a strong commitment to growth in emerging digital technologies.

Back on the domestic stock market, Bharti Airtel’s shares rose by 3 percent to ₹1,974 on the Bombay Stock Exchange. This gain was driven by investor optimism surrounding the telecommunications company’s anticipated earnings growth, reflecting confidence in its business prospects amid a competitive sector.

In policy-related news, Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri clarified that India has not faced any pressure from the United States to reduce imports of Russian crude oil. This statement comes amid ongoing global debates regarding energy sourcing and geopolitical considerations.

At the Business Standard BFSI Insight Summit 2026, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das called for increased financing from banks and financial institutions to support infrastructure projects, advanced manufacturing, green finance initiatives, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These sectors are seen as critical drivers for sustainable economic growth and development.

The market movements on Tuesday highlight the complexity of factors influencing investor decisions, ranging from corporate earnings and capital expenditures to geopolitical developments and monetary policy perspectives. As India’s economy navigates these diverse influences, market participants continue to weigh risks and opportunities across sectors.
