Nike Launches Vegam Run, Its First Running Shoe Made for India at ₹3,795

Nike has introduced its first running shoe specifically designed for the Indian market, a move that highlights the brand's focus on expanding in one of the world's fastest-growing consumer bases. The new shoe, named Vegam Run, is priced at ₹3,795 (approximately $40) and will be available from November 1 on Flipkart, a major Indian e-commerce platform.

This launch is part of Nike's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in India, where the company has observed a rising interest in running and fitness activities. The Vegam Run was developed over a span of five months and represents Nike's effort to cater to local preferences in design and pricing.

Earlier this month, Nike announced plans to establish a new campus in India, signaling a long-term commitment to the region. The company aims to tap into India's growing sportswear market as it faces challenges in other key territories. Notably, sales in China, which contribute about 15 percent of Nike's global revenue, have declined for nine straight quarters. This downturn has been partly driven by increased competition from both international brands and domestic Chinese sportswear companies.

Nike's CEO Elliott Hill, who has been at the helm for two years, is focusing on revitalizing the product lineup to improve the company's overall performance. Hill emphasized the importance of locally inspired designs in key markets like India to help offset difficulties elsewhere. Despite setbacks in segments such as Nike sportswear, the Jordan brand, and the Greater China region, Nike's global running category continues to show strength, with double-digit growth sustained over six consecutive quarters.

However, Hill cautioned investors that the running business, while promising, has not yet grown large enough to fully counterbalance declines in other areas. The company recently forecasted a sharper-than-expected drop in full-year revenue, reflecting ongoing pressures in its broader portfolio.

India's sportswear sector has witnessed a surge in consumer interest as health and fitness trends gain traction. Nike's introduction of a shoe designed specifically for Indian runners aligns with this trend and demonstrates a shift toward tailoring products to meet regional demands rather than relying solely on global models.

Overall, Nike's Vegam Run launch and investment in India illustrate the brand's adaptive approach amid a complex global retail environment. As Nike seeks to regain momentum, its focus on innovation and local market engagement will be key factors in shaping its future growth trajectory.
