Morgan Stanley Raises Paytm Target Price by 35 Percent on Earnings Outlook

Investment firm Morgan Stanley has revised its rating on One 97 Communications Ltd, the parent company of digital payments platform Paytm, upgrading the stock from Equal-weight to Overweight. In conjunction with this change, the firm raised the target share price by 35 percent, moving it from Rs 1,450 to Rs 1,950. This new target suggests a potential increase of roughly 22 percent from Paytm’s closing price of Rs 1,601.60 on October 27.

The brokerage cited improved execution across Paytm’s payments and financial services divisions as key drivers for the adjustment. According to Morgan Stanley, these advancements are likely to fuel quicker revenue growth and support further upward revisions to earnings estimates. The firm emphasized the possibility of continued positive momentum stemming from favourable industry trends and Paytm’s operational progress.

Paytm’s shares have already seen a significant rise, climbing approximately 46 percent over the past six months prior to the upgrade. Despite this rally, Morgan Stanley believes the stock still has room to appreciate. The company noted that consensus expectations for Paytm’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for the fiscal year 2028 have increased by over 21 percent during the same period.

One 97 Communications operates in the rapidly expanding digital payments and financial services sector in India. Paytm’s platform offers a variety of services including mobile wallets, banking, lending, insurance, and wealth management, positioning it as a comprehensive player in the fintech industry. The company’s ability to innovate and expand its user base has been critical to its growth trajectory.

The fintech market in India has witnessed significant growth driven by increased smartphone penetration, government initiatives promoting digital transactions, and a shift in consumer behaviour towards cashless payments. Paytm, as one of the leading players, benefits from these trends but also faces competition from other digital wallets and financial service providers.

Morgan Stanley’s revised outlook reflects confidence in Paytm’s strategic execution and the broader market environment. The upgrade to Overweight suggests the brokerage expects the company to outperform the market over the medium term. Investors may find this recommendation noteworthy, especially given the recent positive earnings revisions and the company’s initiatives to capitalize on new growth opportunities.

While the stock has experienced strong gains, the potential for further appreciation is tied to sustained revenue acceleration and improvements in profitability. Analysts will likely monitor upcoming quarterly results and management commentary closely to assess whether Paytm’s growth momentum remains intact.

In summary, Morgan Stanley’s decision to increase its target price and upgrade Paytm’s rating signals optimism about the company’s future financial performance. As digital payment adoption continues to rise in India and Paytm expands its suite of financial products, the stock remains on the radar for investors looking for exposure to the fintech sector’s evolving landscape.
