Uber Launches New Driver Earnings and Safety Features in India

Uber announced a range of new initiatives on Thursday aimed at improving the earning potential and safety of its drivers in India. Presented at the third edition of Uber Pragati, these updates are designed to offer drivers more flexibility, additional income streams, and enhanced security measures while working on the platform.

Aditya Kapoor, director of supply operations for Uber India and South Asia, emphasized the company’s commitment to making Uber the preferred platform for flexible work in the country. "Our goal is to provide drivers the freedom to work on their own terms, backed by robust safety protections and more opportunities to earn," Kapoor said. He added that Uber aims to keep raising the standard for what drivers should expect from ride-hailing services.

The new programs introduced by Uber incorporate direct feedback from drivers. Among these is the Flexible Drive Pass, a subscription-based option that ranges from as short as six hours to as long as 180 days. This pass is tailored to meet the needs of both part-time and full-time drivers, offering them greater control over their schedules and expenses.

Another feature called Quickstart allows drivers to join Uber through WhatsApp, simplifying the onboarding process and reducing barriers to entry. This innovation is the first of its kind in the ride-hailing industry and aims to attract new drivers quickly and efficiently.

Uber has also rolled out an 'Earn First, Pay Later' system. This feature allows eligible drivers to continue accepting cash trips even if their account balance is depleted, by providing an additional credit limit. This reduces downtime and helps drivers maintain a steady workflow throughout the day.

Communication enhancements include the ability for drivers to send voice notes via Uber’s in-app chat system. Alongside this, a redesigned Driver App consolidates earnings, trip data, and essential updates into one accessible interface, improving the overall user experience.

On the safety front, Uber has launched several initiatives focused on real-world impact. The company’s Ambulance Assistance service, accessible through Uber’s 24/7 Safety Line in collaboration with Dial 4242, is the first of its kind in the ride-hailing sector. Since its rollout, the service has been activated 25 times in under four months, providing critical medical support to riders and drivers involved in accidents.

Another innovative safety tool is Record My Ride. This feature captures encrypted video footage during trips, which has already been instrumental in helping law enforcement verify facts in a disputed case involving a driver and a passenger.

Uber has also implemented Safety Content Flag, a chat monitoring tool that detects potentially inappropriate language in real time. It encourages riders to reconsider harmful messages before sending them. Drivers exposed to abusive communication can cancel trips without penalty to their cancellation statistics. The in-app Driver Safety Hub brings together multiple safety resources, including audio recording and trip-sharing, with some protections remaining enabled by default to ensure continuous security.

Beyond traditional ride services, Uber is broadening driver earnings through additional offerings. The Bike Intercity service enables bike drivers to operate on shorter routes between nearby towns and cities, such as Delhi to Meerut. Uber Direct expands earning options by allowing drivers to fulfill delivery orders for businesses, while Uber Parcel facilitates the transport of personal packages within urban areas.

Uber Pet is another new opportunity, letting participating car drivers accept rides from passengers traveling with pets. Additionally, Uber’s refer-and-earn program incentivizes drivers to bring new earners onto the platform, supporting growth and community building.

These advancements come at a time when the gig economy in India continues to evolve rapidly. Ride-hailing remains a key source of income for millions, and platforms like Uber are under pressure to provide safer, more reliable, and more flexible working conditions. By introducing these features, Uber aims to respond to driver needs while maintaining competitiveness in the expanding Indian market.
