Indian Stock Market Recovers Modestly Amid Global Uncertainty
The Indian stock market saw a modest rebound on Friday, with the benchmark indices climbing after a sharp decline the previous day that had erased significant investor wealth. The Sensex ended the session 315 points higher at 73,896, while the Nifty 50 gained 77 points to finish at 23,140.50.
Despite these gains, broader market performance was mixed. The Nifty Midcap 100 index slipped into negative territory, whereas the Nifty Smallcap 100 managed to hold onto slight gains, reflecting uneven sentiment across different market segments.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, pointed out that volatile crude oil prices and persistently high bond yields limited the extent of the market's recovery. Inflation worries, foreign fund outflows, and pressure on emerging market currencies continue to cast a shadow over investor confidence. However, he noted that selective buying after recent price corrections helped maintain a positive tone, albeit within a narrow trading range.
Market resilience was evident as the Nifty index remained above the psychologically significant 23,000 level, supported by strong domestic liquidity. Nair explained that while higher oil prices and global bond yields may constrain risk appetite in the near term, improving valuations combined with solid domestic growth prospects encourage targeted accumulation, enabling the market to better withstand external pressures.
Looking internationally, US stocks closed higher on Friday. The S&P 500 increased by 0.51%, the Nasdaq rose 0.48%, and the Dow Jones advanced 0.93%, buoyed by gains in technology firms, particularly those involved in artificial intelligence. Microsoft’s shares jumped 3.7% following the announcement of new Copilot features, while Qualcomm and Dell saw increases of 4% and 5%, respectively. Akamai Technologies added 3.2% after securing an $11.6 billion deal with AI-focused company Anthropic.
For the week, the S&P 500 rose 1.2% and the Nasdaq climbed 2%, though investors remained cautious as Brent crude prices stayed above $100 a barrel and the 10-year US Treasury yield reached a nearly two-decade high of 5.196%. The S&P 500’s current trading multiple stands just below 19 times expected earnings, marking its lowest valuation since 2023.
European markets also experienced gains. The STOXX 600 closed 0.4% higher on Friday and recorded a weekly increase of 0.5%, ending a three-week losing streak. This boost came as oil prices eased and optimism grew around the possibility of a truce in the Middle East. Energy stocks declined by 1.3%, while banks and airlines benefited from lower fuel costs, rising 1.3% and gaining respectively. UBS shares rose 3.5%, and Konecranes jumped 7.4% following a share buyback announcement and improved financial forecasts. Nevertheless, investors remain wary amid rising bond yields and a sharp drop in German consumer confidence due to high energy expenses.
On the Indian market’s most active stocks by value, Policybazaar led with a turnover of Rs 4,895 crore, followed by Whirlpool India at Rs 2,583 crore, Reliance Industries at Rs 1,604 crore, and banking heavyweights HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank at Rs 1,457 crore and Rs 1,438 crore respectively. Other notable active stocks included BSE and Infosys.
In terms of trading volume, Vodafone Idea topped with 30.93 crore shares traded. Ola Electric followed with 19.46 crore shares, Suzlon Energy with 5.71 crore, and Policybazaar with 4.16 crore shares exchanged. IFCI, Meesho, and J&P Power also featured among the highest volume counters.
Stocks showing notable buying interest included Whirlpool India, Engineers India, Welspun Corp, Balrampur Chini, Kaynes Technology, HBL Power, and HEG. Several companies reached new 52-week highs, including Engineers India, Welspun Corp, Indegene, Cadila Healthcare, Allied Blenders, and MCX India.
On the other hand, selling pressure was seen in shares of Ola Electric, Meesho, Fortis Healthcare, JK Cement, Paytm, Policybazaar, and Max Healthcare. Some stocks hit 52-week lows such as Policybazaar, India Cements, Tata Motors PV, Motherson Sumi Wiring, SJVN, Latent View, and Ircon.
Market breadth favored the bulls with 1,925 stocks advancing on the NSE out of 3,647 that traded, while 1,594 declined and 128 remained unchanged.
This market activity highlights the cautious optimism prevailing among investors as they balance domestic growth prospects against global uncertainties including inflation, geopolitical tensions, and fluctuating commodity prices. The mixed performance across segments and sectors reflects ongoing selective risk-taking, with liquidity and valuations playing key roles in shaping near-term market direction.
