Key Factors Influencing Indian Stock Market Movement on Thursday

The Indian stock market ended lower on Wednesday, as the Sensex and Nifty 50 closed after losing ground following a brief two-day rally. Investors digested the Reserve Bank of India's first interest rate increase in nearly four years along with its new policy stance described as 'calibrated tightening'.

The benchmark Sensex dropped 429 points, settling below 72,639, while the Nifty 50 was down more than 173 points to close near 22,603. Broader market indices showed mixed performance, with the Nifty Midcap 100 declining and the Smallcap 100 managing slight gains.

Market participants focused on the RBI’s monetary policy update, which included a rate hike as anticipated. However, the transition from a neutral to a calibrated tightening stance caught attention, signaling a possible shift in the interest rate cycle. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, pointed out that this change in stance was the market’s main takeaway. He noted that while the RBI raised growth forecasts, suggesting robust domestic economic fundamentals, concerns about elevated inflation and the central bank's renewed emphasis on price stability weighed on investor sentiment.

External factors also influenced market trends. Ahead of the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, the Indian rupee remained under pressure due to rising U.S. Treasury yields, a stronger dollar, and continued foreign institutional investor outflows, which further contributed to the market's decline. Sector-wise, banking stocks showed resilience, benefiting from expectations of improved margins in a higher interest rate environment. Conversely, selling pressure was widespread across most other sectors.

Looking forward, analysts expect market attention to shift toward the September-quarter earnings reports for clearer direction. The underlying macroeconomic environment supports optimistic earnings expectations. Still, investors will closely monitor corporate management discussions to see if companies can manage rising input costs, maintain pricing power, and sustain demand during the latter half of the fiscal year.

Across the Atlantic, U.S. stock indices such as the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 retreated from recent record highs amid a rebound in Treasury yields and oil prices. Investor caution heightened as the market awaited the Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes. Brent crude oil prices climbed back above the $100 per barrel mark, driven by ongoing supply concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East. Technology and semiconductor sectors faced notable declines, with leading chipmakers like Micron Technology and Nvidia experiencing drops in share prices.

European markets also faced pressure on Wednesday. The STOXX 600 index declined over 1 percent, weighed down by rising oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions. The euro weakened sharply, impacted by concerns over France’s fiscal situation and its potential ripple effects on European debt markets. Yields on eurozone bonds increased, particularly in countries with higher debt levels. For instance, the French 10-year bond yield surged by nearly 15 basis points to 4.8959 percent, marking its largest daily increase in two weeks.

In India, the most actively traded stocks by value on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) included Chennai Petro with turnover worth Rs 3,133 crore, Bharti Airtel at Rs 2,553 crore, BSE at Rs 2,194 crore, HDFC Bank at Rs 2,111 crore, ICICI Bank at Rs 1,993 crore, Kotak Mahindra Bank at Rs 1,666 crore, and Reliance Industries (RIL) at Rs 1,438 crore. These figures highlight where investor focus and liquidity were concentrated during the session.

These numbers reflect active participation in these stocks during the trading day.

Several stocks showed strong buying interest, including Chennai Petro, PVR Inox, PTC Industries, Bharti Hexacom, Cupid, Physicswallah, and AGC Networks. Meanwhile, stocks under selling pressure included NALCO, GSK Pharma, Vedanta Iron and Steel, Titan Company, Adani Enterprises, Balkrishna Industries, and IndusInd Bank.

Notable 52-week highs were recorded by PVR Inox, PTC Industries, Cupid, Gland Pharma, HFCL, TBO Tek, and Laurus Labs. On the other hand, stocks such as KEC International, UPL, Century Textiles, Inox Wind, SBI Card, Chambal Fertilisers, and Mahindra & Mahindra hit 52-week lows.

Market breadth leaned slightly bearish on Wednesday, with 2,043 stocks advancing and 1,549 declining out of the 3,690 stocks traded on the NSE, while 98 remained unchanged.

This market movement follows the RBI's decision to raise rates, marking a potential inflection point for investors. With global economic and geopolitical variables influencing sentiment, the upcoming earnings season and Federal Reserve policy updates will likely play a key role in shaping market direction in the near term.
