Vedanta Shares Rise 3.5% After Rs 5 Interim Dividend Declaration

Shares of Vedanta Ltd experienced a notable increase on Friday, climbing 3.48 percent to close at Rs 261.90. This surge followed the company's announcement of an interim dividend of Rs 5 per share for the financial year 2027, amounting to a total payout of Rs 1,955 crore.

This dividend marks a significant milestone for Vedanta, as it is the first interim dividend declared since the company underwent a major restructuring earlier this year. In a strategic move, Vedanta demerged its operations into five separate entities, a change expected to affect its future dividend distribution patterns.

The company has set October 14 as the record date for shareholders to be eligible for this dividend. Due to the T+1 settlement system currently in place, investors must purchase shares by October 13 to qualify for the payout.

Earlier in 2023, Vedanta reorganized its business by spinning off Vedanta Aluminium Metal, Vedanta Power, Vedanta Oil and Gas, and Vedanta Iron and Steel into distinct companies. The remaining company now primarily consists of Hindustan Zinc, Zinc International, and the base metals division. This reorganization is likely to influence the scale and frequency of dividends since many of the cash-rich units have been separated.

Market analysts have noted that while Vedanta is expected to maintain its status as a dividend-paying company, the absolute dividend per share may see a structural reduction following the demerger. Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, highlighted that the residual company's dividend payouts will largely depend on its 60.71 percent ownership in Hindustan Zinc. The earnings and dividend potential are also connected to market prices of zinc and silver traded on the London Metal Exchange.

Vedanta has a long history of dividend payments, having declared 50 dividends since July 23, 2001. Before this recent announcement, the company issued an interim dividend of Rs 11 per share in March 2023. In 2025, Vedanta paid two interim dividends of Rs 16 per share in August and Rs 7 per share in June, while in 2024, it distributed four dividends totaling Rs 43.5 per share.

According to Sunny Agrawal, investors who previously viewed Vedanta as a single high-yield stock will now need to consider holding shares in multiple demerged entities to replicate previous aggregate dividend yields. He added that improved capital allocation and governance among the separated businesses may support strong cash returns at the group level over time. However, dividend payments are expected to become more variable, influenced by business cycles and specific market conditions, requiring investors to adopt a more active approach rather than relying solely on Vedanta.

Vedanta’s restructuring reflects a broader trend in the mining and metals sector, where companies are optimizing their portfolios to focus on core assets and improve operational efficiencies. This kind of corporate reorganization can impact investor returns and requires close attention to dividend policies and market dynamics.

Investors and market watchers will be observing how Vedanta’s new structure influences its financial performance and shareholder returns going forward, particularly given the significance of Hindustan Zinc’s role in its earnings profile.
