Sensex and Nifty Rise Nearly 1% on Strong Q2 Earnings and Lower Oil Prices

Indian equity markets recorded significant gains on Tuesday, with the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 advancing by close to 1 percent each. This marked the second day of recovery following a sustained period of selling pressure. The Sensex climbed over 685 points to finish at 73,068, while the Nifty 50 added more than 220 points, closing at 22,776. These gains contributed nearly Rs 5 lakh crore to the total market capitalization of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), pushing it close to Rs 474 lakh crore.

The upward momentum was driven by a combination of factors, including a notable decline in crude oil prices, encouraging quarterly earnings from key sectors, and supportive global market trends. Crude oil prices dipped below the $100 per barrel level after major economies in the Group of Seven (G7) released substantial oil reserves and introduced alternative supply channels. This move helped ease concerns over disruptions in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil shipments.

Strong quarterly results from financial services firms and retail companies also played a key role in lifting investor sentiment. Analysts noted that these sectors demonstrated resilience despite ongoing challenges posed by rising input costs and inflationary pressures. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, commented, "The fall in oil prices, combined with solid Q2 updates and encouraging global cues, has improved market confidence and triggered a bounce back from oversold levels. Large-cap stocks continue to attract interest due to their relatively better valuations and ability to handle cost pressures." He added that market participants remain watchful as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prepares to announce its policy stance, with a close eye on inflation outlook and potential interest rate decisions.

On the international front, US equity markets also showed strength. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite reached record highs supported by easing Treasury yields and lower energy costs. Major technology companies such as Meta, Tesla, and Amazon posted gains, while Apple and Alphabet experienced slight declines. European markets followed a positive trend as well, with Britain's FTSE 100 rising 0.4 percent, France's CAC 40 and Germany's DAX both up by 0.6 percent, and the STOXX 600 index advancing 0.5 percent. The euro currency strengthened modestly after hitting a 17-month low, while political developments, including Spain's announcement of a snap election, added complexity to the economic outlook.

Trading activity on India's National Stock Exchange (NSE) was robust, with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Trent, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and ICICI Bank among the highest valued stocks in terms of turnover. Vodafone Idea led volume trading with 33.73 crore shares changing hands, followed by Ola Electric, Yes Bank, and others. Market participants showed strong buying interest in stocks like Trent, Urban Company, Aether Industries, PG Electroplast, Honasa Consumer, HEG, and Motilal Oswal. Conversely, selling pressure was notable in Coal India, Phoenix Mills, Bandhan Bank, and Federal Bank.

Several stocks reached significant price milestones on Tuesday. Aether Industries, BHEL, Kalpataru Power, HFCL, Cupid, Sterlite Tech, and Aditya Infotech achieved 52-week highs. On the other hand, Max Healthcare, GIC, HUDCO, Bharti Hexacom, DMart, IOC, and Max Financial touched 52-week lows, reflecting varied sectoral performance.

Market breadth favored the bulls, with 2,455 out of 3,695 stocks traded on the NSE posting gains. Declines were seen in 1,125 stocks, while 115 remained unchanged. This breadth indicates a broad-based recovery across sectors rather than a narrow rally.

This positive market movement comes at a time when investors are closely monitoring corporate earnings reports for indications of economic health amid inflation concerns and cost pressures. The Reserve Bank of India's upcoming monetary policy announcement is also expected to influence market direction, as traders seek clarity on inflation management and interest rate trajectories.

Overall, Tuesday's market rally was supported by easing commodity prices, healthy earnings, and global positive trends. The cautious optimism among investors reflects a search for stability and growth opportunities amid a complex economic environment.
