Sensex Surges Over 1,400 Points as Nifty Tops 24,350, Market Cap Hits ₹500 Trillion
The Indian stock market witnessed a strong rally on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as the Sensex surged by more than 1,400 points and the Nifty50 index climbed above the 24,350 level. This uptick brought the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies to over ₹500 trillion, marking a significant milestone for Indian equities.
At 9:19 AM, the Sensex stood at 78,736.86 points, reflecting a gain of 1,435.46 points or 1.86 percent. The Nifty50 index rose 395.20 points, or 1.65 percent, reaching 24,355.80. These gains came amid a sharp decline in global oil prices and optimism surrounding the US midterm elections, where Democrats regained control of Congress. Market participants interpreted the election results as a signal for a potential quicker resolution to the ongoing US-Iran tensions, which eased geopolitical concerns and lifted investor sentiment.
Among the Nifty50 stocks, Shriram Finance, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), and Asian Paints emerged as the top performers. The broader market also participated in the rally, with the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices advancing by 1.19 percent and 1.14 percent respectively. Sector analysis showed that the Nifty Auto, Financial Services, and Realty sectors outperformed, while Pharma and Healthcare sectors experienced the largest declines.
By 10:00 AM, the Nifty50 had extended its gains to 24,388.40 points, up 427.80 points or 1.79 percent, while the Sensex reached 78,854.23 points, climbing 1,552.83 points or 2.01 percent. The market capitalization across all BSE-listed companies rose by ₹6.4 trillion from the previous day’s close, underscoring the robust buying interest.
Investor enthusiasm was further supported by corporate earnings announcements scheduled for the day. Companies such as Aadhar Housing Finance, Abbott India, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, Apollo Pipes, Astral, Bharti Airtel, Glenmark Pharma, and Fortis Healthcare were among those releasing their second-quarter results. These quarterly earnings reports often provide important insights into sectoral health and corporate performance, influencing market trends.
Notably, some individual stock movements stood out. Despite reporting an impressive 207 percent year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit for Q2FY27, Nykaa’s parent company FSN E-Commerce saw its share price drop 3.3 percent to ₹343.70 on the NSE. Conversely, Lenskart Solutions' shares surged 10.6 percent to ₹762.75 after the company posted a 122.1 percent increase in consolidated net profit for the quarter.
The auto sector shone brightly, with stocks like Ashok Leyland, Maruti Suzuki India, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles leading the gains. The Nifty Auto index climbed nearly 3 percent in early trade, supported by lower crude oil prices, which typically reduce input costs for automobile manufacturers. Other notable gainers on the Sensex included Maruti, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finance, and Mahindra & Mahindra, all registering gains between 3 and 5 percent. Bharti Airtel was a rare laggard, recording a marginal decline ahead of its Q2 earnings release.
This rally fits within a broader context of global and domestic factors shaping investor sentiment. The easing of crude oil prices reduces inflationary pressures and input costs for many industries, while a more stable geopolitical environment encourages risk-taking. Additionally, the Indian stock market has been closely watched amid global uncertainties and shifting monetary policies.
As the day progressed, the market demonstrated broad-based buying interest, with nearly all sectors trading higher except for Pharma and Healthcare. The Nifty MidCap 100 and SmallCap 100 indices also participated in the upward momentum, rising over 1 percent each.
The stock market’s ability to reclaim significant levels like the 24,000 mark on the Nifty and cross the ₹500 trillion market capitalization threshold highlights investor confidence in India's economic prospects. These developments will be closely monitored by market participants and analysts as they assess the sustainability of the rally amid upcoming corporate earnings and global economic indicators.
