Shares of Australian data center operator NextDC experienced a significant jump on Thursday, closing up 50.84 percent. This surge came after Goodman Group and U.S.-listed data center giant Digital Realty purchased stakes in NextDC, each acquiring up to 9.9 percent of the company.

According to a regulatory filing released the same day, the two firms conducted an aftermarket bookbuild the previous Wednesday, offering shares at A$9.50 apiece. This move caught the attention of markets and investors, sparking a sharp rally in NextDC's stock price.

NextDC's board described the stake acquisitions as "opportunistic." This characterization was tied to the timing, which came just two weeks after the company disclosed a delay in the power supply for its M3 data center in Melbourne. The delay had prompted NextDC to revise its fiscal 2027 guidance downward, raising concerns among investors prior to the stake purchases.

The company also stated it was unaware of the final outcome of the share purchase at the time of the filing. Representatives from Goodman and Digital Realty informed investors that they currently have no plans to launch a takeover bid for NextDC. However, both companies reserved the right to reconsider such a move in the future.

This positive development for NextDC stands in contrast to the recent performance of several U.S. data center stocks. Shares of CoreWeave dropped approximately 9 percent, while Iren declined by around 11.2 percent on Wednesday. These declines followed the sweeping victories by the Democratic Party in the U.S. midterm elections.

The election results have raised expectations of increased regulatory scrutiny and potential restrictions on data center development in the United States. Such measures could slow down the rapid expansion of infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence and other data-intensive technologies, which has been a key driver in the sector's growth.

NextDC operates data centers that provide critical infrastructure for cloud services, digital businesses, and enterprises in Australia. The company has been expanding its footprint to meet growing demand for data storage and processing, driven by trends such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things.

Goodman Group is a global industrial property group headquartered in Australia, known for its logistics and data center assets. Digital Realty is one of the largest data center providers worldwide, with a broad portfolio serving cloud giants, enterprises, and network providers.

The strategic investments by Goodman and Digital Realty in NextDC highlight continued interest in the data center sector despite some market volatility and sector-specific challenges. Data centers remain a fundamental component of the digital economy, supporting everything from streaming services to cloud applications and AI workloads.

As NextDC navigates the power supply delay issue and adjusts its growth outlook, the backing from major players like Goodman and Digital Realty could provide financial support and industry confidence. The near 51 percent increase in NextDC’s share price signals strong market reaction and optimism about the company’s future prospects.

Investors and analysts will be closely watching how NextDC resolves its infrastructure challenges and whether Goodman or Digital Realty make any further moves regarding their stakes. The data center industry continues to evolve amid technological advancements and shifting regulatory landscapes, making these developments particularly relevant for stakeholders.
