Auto Stocks Gain as Brent Crude Oil Prices Drop Sharply

Shares of leading automobile manufacturers witnessed significant gains following a steep decline in Brent crude oil prices. Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles (CV) and Ashok Leyland led the rally, rising as much as 8 percent each. Other prominent auto stocks including Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (PV), Maruti Suzuki India, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) also climbed between 3 and 5 percent.

At 09:23 AM, the Nifty Auto index was trading 2.5 percent higher, outperforming the broader Nifty 50 index which gained 1.62 percent. Investors’ enthusiasm around auto stocks was largely driven by a sharp 10 percent drop in Brent crude oil prices, which settled near $94 per barrel.

The fall in crude prices has been attributed to growing hopes for a resolution to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. According to V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, easing tensions could ease the upward pressure on oil prices that had previously weighed on markets. He noted that the high crude prices had played a significant role in the Republican losses during the recent mid-term elections in the US.

India’s economy has demonstrated considerable resilience amid these developments, with corporate earnings showing marked improvement. Investor sentiment has been further buoyed by speculation that the upcoming Budget might include the abolition of the Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax. These factors combined have encouraged foreign institutional investors to adopt a more positive outlook on Indian equities.

Industry data also supports the upbeat mood in the auto sector. Wholesale volumes in October 2026 showed robust growth, increasing over 15 percent year-on-year across most segments except tractors, which experienced a decline. Analysts from Kotak Institutional Equities pointed out that retail volumes fell due to a mismatch in the festive season calendar affecting passenger vehicles and two-wheelers.

Monarch Networth Capital Limited highlighted that the Indian automobile industry enjoyed healthy volume growth in October 2026, driven by strong festive demand, rising consumer confidence, and sustained replacement demand. Factors such as Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalisation and enhanced affordability contributed positively to vehicle sales across various categories. However, the farm equipment segment continued to face challenges, registering a double-digit decline in volumes, mainly due to ongoing pressure on tractor sales.

Looking ahead, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles expressed confidence in its foundation and competitive product lineup as it enters fiscal year 2027. The company anticipates that industry growth will moderate compared to FY26, reflecting a higher base and some uncertainties in the external environment. Nevertheless, the core demand drivers for commercial vehicles remain strong, supported by ongoing infrastructure projects, better fleet utilization, and a shift towards cleaner and more connected transportation solutions.

Similarly, Ashok Leyland expects demand in FY27 to be shaped by sustained infrastructure and road construction activities. Replacement demand is also likely to pick up due to an ageing vehicle fleet and increased utilization on key routes. The company foresees improved operating economics fueled by better payload capacity and fuel efficiency options. In the trucking segment, demand will continue to be driven by core haulage and intermediate commercial vehicles, while construction-related vehicles such as tippers will depend on the pace of public and private capital expenditure. Bus demand is expected to remain steady, supported by segments such as staff transport, tourism, and schools, along with opportunities from state transport undertakings and institutional orders, according to Ashok Leyland’s FY26 annual report.

As the auto sector adjusts to shifting market dynamics, the combined effects of lower crude prices, economic resilience, and positive policy expectations are fostering investor and industry optimism. These developments are likely to play a key role in shaping the trajectory of automobile companies in India in the near term.
