MCX Revenue Expected to Grow 19% Annually Through FY30 on Market Expansion

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is anticipated to experience significant revenue growth over the next several years, with projections indicating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19 percent through fiscal year 2030. This increase is largely fueled by a rise in investor engagement and the launch of innovative commodity products, according to a recent report from Macquarie Equity Research.

MCX, which dominates the Indian commodity derivatives market, is expected to see its revenue climb from Rs 23.02 billion in FY26 to an estimated Rs 39.92 billion by FY29. The report highlights a strong growth trajectory in the near term, forecasting revenue increases of 24.5 percent in FY27, 22.4 percent in FY28, and 13.8 percent in FY29.

The Indian commodities market is still in its early stages compared to more developed markets globally, providing ample opportunity for expansion. Macquarie points out that the market remains under-penetrated, with significant potential for increased participation by both retail and institutional investors. This growth is expected to be supported by broader hedging activities and a wider array of commodity products.

Investor numbers have already shown a notable uptick. MCX's traded client base expanded from 0.9 million in FY24 to 2.1 million in FY26. Despite this growth, participation in commodities remains relatively low compared to equity markets in India, suggesting room for further growth in market engagement.

The report also emphasizes the role of product innovation in driving MCX's expansion. Options trading on MCX has seen rapid growth, with options notional turnover reaching nearly Rs 1,200 trillion in FY26. Macquarie expects this figure to more than double, reaching approximately Rs 3,220 trillion by FY30. The introduction of smaller contract sizes, monthly contract expiries, and bullion products are expected to attract a wider range of traders and investors.

MCX currently holds a commanding market share of about 98 percent, benefiting from its first-mover advantage in India's commodity derivatives sector. The exchange’s ongoing diversification into new commodity segments is gradually reducing its reliance on traditional products such as bullion, crude oil, and natural gas.

However, the report notes some challenges ahead. Growth may be tempered by a high base effect following recent strong trading volumes. Regulatory changes and the emergence of competition, particularly from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) entering the commodity trading space, could also impact MCX’s market position.

From a profitability standpoint, MCX’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin stood at 71.5 percent in FY26. This margin is described as being near its peak potential, indicating that future profit growth will largely depend on increasing revenue rather than margin expansion.

MCX plays a critical role in India’s financial markets by providing a platform for risk management and price discovery across various commodities. The exchange’s growth prospects reflect broader trends in India’s economy, including rising investment activity and the increasing sophistication of market participants.

As the Indian commodities market matures, MCX’s strategy to expand its product offerings and widen its investor base will be key to sustaining its leadership. While external factors such as regulatory shifts and new entrants pose risks, the underlying fundamentals suggest a positive outlook for the exchange’s financial performance through the end of this decade.
