BSE Replaces Wipro in Nifty 50, Triggering Major Market Flows
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is set to enter the Nifty 50 index, replacing IT giant Wipro as part of the semi-annual reshuffle of the benchmark index. This change, effective today, is expected to bring significant shifts in capital flows for both companies and investors tracking the index.
According to analysis by Nuvama Institutional Equities, BSE could attract inflows totaling approximately $668 million following its inclusion. This makes the exchange the primary beneficiary of the index revision. Over the course of 2026, BSE shares have already gained 57%, adding to an impressive multiyear performance that includes a 640% rise over three years and a staggering 2,239% increase in five years. Despite these gains, the stock has faced some recent pressure, declining more than 2% in the past week and throughout the current month. This downturn is linked to concerns around the exchange’s Client Acquisition System (CAS) and broader market volatility dampening investor enthusiasm.
On the other hand, Wipro is expected to experience outflows close to $230 million due to its removal from the Nifty 50. The IT company has been significantly affected by the broader selloff in Indian IT stocks that began early this year. The sector saw heightened volatility after the initial wave of excitement around artificial intelligence (AI) innovations gave way to worries about the future viability of traditional IT service roles.
While the AI-driven correction initially unsettled the sector, later developments helped stabilize some IT stocks. However, additional factors such as concerns over Federal Reserve interest rate hikes have continued to weigh on investor sentiment. Wipro’s shares have dropped more than 41% during 2026, with a one-year loss exceeding 34%. This decline has reduced the company’s market capitalization to roughly Rs 1.55 lakh crore. Peer companies like HCL Technologies, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Tech Mahindra have also seen declines of up to 37% this year, highlighting the sector-wide challenges.
Following the index adjustment, Wipro will be moved to the Nifty Next 50 index, whereas BSE will exit the Nifty Midcap 150 index. This reshuffle reflects shifting market dynamics and investor preferences within India’s equity markets.
Beyond BSE and Wipro, Nuvama’s report identifies other significant inflows and outflows from the broader NSE indices rebalancing. Vedanta Aluminium, Adani Enterprises, Polycab, and Power India are among those expected to benefit from increased passive fund investments, while companies such as Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), Reliance Industries, Shree Cement, and United Spirits face notable outflows.
Index revisions like this are routine in equity markets, designed to ensure that benchmark indices accurately represent the changing market landscape and company performances. For investors, these adjustments can impact portfolio allocations, fund flows, and stock price movements, especially for those tracking index funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) based on the Nifty 50.
The inclusion of BSE reflects its growing importance and performance as a stock exchange in India’s capital markets. Conversely, Wipro’s exit signals challenges faced by certain IT firms amid evolving technology trends and investor concerns. Market participants will watch closely how these changes influence trading patterns and sector sentiment in the coming months.
