The order was announced on October 14, 2026, and was hailed by Volvo Buses India as a major milestone in their operations within the country. The company emphasized that this deal reflects a mutual goal between Volvo and MSRTC to provide improved travel experiences for passengers in the region.

Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President of the Bus Division at VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd, the parent company of Volvo Buses India, expressed optimism about the contract’s impact. He remarked that the agreement demonstrates a shared dedication to elevating the quality of travel and making premium bus services more accessible to the residents of Maharashtra.

The buses, to be manufactured at Volvo's facility in Hoskote, Karnataka, will include models from the popular Volvo 9600 series. These buses are known for their comfort, safety features, and reliability. The 9600 series offers both seater and sleeper configurations, allowing MSRTC to cater to different passenger needs on intercity routes.

This order stands out as the single largest in Volvo Buses India’s history, underscoring the growing demand for high-quality public transport options in India. Maharashtra, being one of the most populous and economically significant states, has been focusing on modernizing its transport infrastructure. The addition of these premium buses aligns with broader initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and passenger convenience.

The Maharashtra State Transport Corporation operates one of the country’s largest government-run bus services, covering extensive routes across urban and rural areas. Upgrading its fleet with advanced buses from Volvo is expected to enhance operational efficiency while offering passengers a more comfortable and safer journey.

Over recent years, the Indian bus market has witnessed an increase in demand for luxury and semi-luxury buses, influenced by rising incomes and changing travel preferences. Manufacturers like Volvo have been at the forefront, introducing models with better fuel efficiency, superior ride quality, and modern amenities. These developments contribute to a shift in public transportation, making it a more attractive alternative to private vehicles and air travel for medium-distance routes.

The MSRTC's decision to procure a large number of sleeper buses also highlights the growing importance of overnight travel options, which help reduce travel fatigue and maximize passenger convenience. Sleeper buses are especially popular on longer routes, allowing travelers to rest comfortably during their journey.

With this substantial order, Volvo Buses India is poised to strengthen its footprint in the Indian market. The collaboration with MSRTC illustrates how state transport authorities are investing in fleet modernization to meet rising passenger expectations and environmental standards.

As Volvo prepares to deliver these buses in the coming months, the focus will be on ensuring timely production and deployment, as well as providing after-sales support to maintain service quality. The enhanced fleet is expected to contribute positively to Maharashtra’s public transport system by offering a blend of comfort, safety, and reliability for daily commuters and long-distance travelers alike.
