IndusInd Bank, India's fifth-largest private sector bank, announced a net profit of ₹1,242 crore for the second quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, marking a sharp turnaround from a loss of ₹437 crore in the same period last year. This profit surge was supported by a significant reduction in provisions and a strong rise in other income, reflecting improved financial health and operational efficiency.

The bank's net interest income (NII) stood at ₹4,569 crore during Q2FY27, representing a 4 percent increase compared to the previous year. However, this figure saw a slight decline of 2 percent from the preceding quarter. Other income rose substantially by 36 percent year-on-year, reaching ₹2,248 crore, highlighting the bank's diversified revenue streams beyond interest earnings.

Despite these gains, IndusInd Bank's net interest margin (NIM) dropped to 3.23 percent in Q2FY27. This was 34 basis points lower than the previous quarter and 9 basis points below the level recorded in the corresponding quarter of the prior fiscal year. The margin compression may reflect competitive pressures or changes in asset-liability composition.

A key driver of profitability was the steep decline in provisions and contingencies, which fell by 54 percent year-on-year and 12 percent sequentially, settling at ₹1,223 crore. This reduction indicates improved asset quality and lower expected credit losses.

Gross slippages, which measure fresh non-performing assets, declined to ₹1,460 crore in Q2FY27 from ₹1,660 crore in Q1FY27 and ₹2,537 crore in the same quarter a year ago. The improvement in asset quality was further confirmed by a decrease in the gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio to 2.73 percent, down 52 basis points from the previous quarter. The net NPA ratio also eased by 12 basis points to 0.83 percent, signaling healthier credit portfolios and effective risk management.

Credit growth remained robust, with the bank's loan book expanding 11 percent both year-on-year and sequentially to ₹3.63 trillion. The consumer banking segment led this growth with a notable 38 percent increase, supported by ₹16,564 crore in FCNR(B) deposits. The wholesale lending portfolio also grew by 10 percent over the same periods, reflecting balanced growth across segments.

Deposits grew by 10 percent from the previous year and 3 percent from the last quarter, reaching ₹4.28 trillion. This was boosted by FCNR(B) mobilization of $3.51 billion under the Reserve Bank of India's swap window facility, which gave IndusInd a market share of approximately 2.2 percent in this scheme. Overall deposit share stood at 1.5 percent, with a healthy mix of retail and non-leveraged deposits contributing to a stronger funding base.

Rajiv Anand, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of IndusInd Bank, commented on the results, stating, "Growth momentum has picked up, and we maintained a cautious approach toward risk and liquidity. Our strategic priorities have led to better asset quality, a stronger balance sheet, and higher profitability. These outcomes reflect the disciplined efforts we have put in over recent quarters."

He further noted the importance of the FCNR(B) deposits under the RBI swap window, emphasizing the bank's competitive position in this segment. Anand also revealed plans to expand the bank's footprint by opening around 100 new branches in the second half of FY27. The focus will be on under-penetrated regions and select markets where growth had slowed previously, aiming to enhance distribution and sales capabilities to support future expansion.

IndusInd Bank's performance in Q2FY27 showcases a recovery in profitability driven by prudent risk management and diversified income streams. The improvements in asset quality and deposit mobilization highlight the bank's resilience amid a competitive banking environment in India. With an eye on growth opportunities, particularly in retail banking, the bank is positioning itself to strengthen its market presence while maintaining financial stability.

As the Indian banking sector continues evolving with increasing digital adoption and regulatory changes, the ability of lenders like IndusInd Bank to balance growth with asset quality and capital adequacy remains crucial. The bank's strategic initiatives and operational discipline appear to be delivering positive results, setting a foundation for sustainable growth in the coming years.
