Maharashtra FDA Seizes ₹1.56 Crore Food Stock in Safety Crackdown
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a comprehensive statewide operation resulting in the seizure of approximately 43.56 tonnes of food products along with 719.2 litres of milk and ghee. The combined value of the confiscated items is estimated at ₹1.56 crore, according to officials who spoke on Saturday.
The items seized were suspected of being either adulterated, substandard, or improperly labelled, raising concerns about food safety for consumers across the state. The FDA's efforts aim to enforce stringent food safety regulations and protect public health.
In addition to the seizures, the department took decisive action by destroying 564 litres of milk in Mumbai that failed to meet safety standards. Authorities also suspended the licences and registrations of multiple food establishments found violating food safety norms during recent inspections.
The operation covered several divisions within Maharashtra, with varying amounts of food stock seized in each region. The Konkan division topped the list by confiscating 9.99 tonnes of food products valued at ₹53.55 lakh. Pune division followed with a seizure of 2.11 tonnes worth ₹7.93 lakh.
Nashik authorities seized 4,069 kilograms of food items in addition to 62.2 litres of ghee, with a total estimated value of ₹8.25 lakh. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division reported the highest volume of food seized, tallying up to 26.84 tonnes and valued at ₹64 lakh. Meanwhile, the Nagpur division intercepted 883.3 kilograms of cooking oil worth ₹1.77 lakh.
Prohibited food items were also uncovered during the campaign. Pune saw confiscations valued at ₹19.56 lakh, Mumbai at ₹4.22 lakh, and Nashik at ₹19,090. These actions demonstrate the FDA’s commitment to eliminating unsafe food products from the market.
Further scrutiny resulted in the suspension of operations for seven food establishments in Mumbai. Inspections revealed multiple breaches of food safety regulations including unsanitary kitchen conditions, faulty drainage systems, improper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods, use of unauthorized food coloring agents, and lack of valid medical certificates for workers. These violations pose serious risks to consumers and are taken seriously by regulatory bodies.
The Maharashtra FDA has emphasized that such enforcement drives will continue regularly to ensure compliance with food safety laws and to safeguard consumer interests. The agency’s vigilant monitoring and swift action against offenders serve as a deterrent to businesses that compromise on quality and safety.
Food safety remains a critical public health issue in India as the market expands and supply chains become more complex. Regulatory authorities like the FDA play a vital role in maintaining standards and preventing the distribution of hazardous or fraudulent food products. This recent crackdown in Maharashtra is a part of ongoing efforts nationwide to uphold food quality and protect the wellbeing of the population.
