IDBI Bank Shares Surge 13% to Five-Week Peak on Heavy Trading
IDBI Bank's stock experienced a notable upswing on Wednesday, climbing as much as 13 percent during intraday trading to reach a five-week peak. Despite a broadly flat market, the shares of the lender, which is poised for privatisation, opened higher at ₹84.80 on the National Stock Exchange and surged further to hit ₹93.60.
Year-to-date, the bank’s shares have declined by 12 percent, which is somewhat in line with the benchmark Nifty 50's 13.6 percent drop during the same period. Over the last twelve months, IDBI Bank’s stock price has remained relatively steady, contrasting with the Nifty’s 10 percent decrease.
By 1 PM, the stock was still holding on to much of its gains, trading approximately 9.7 percent higher at ₹91. This strong rally was supported by a significant increase in trading volumes, making IDBI Bank one of the most actively traded stocks on the NSE that day. Around 116.5 million shares were exchanged, with a total turnover surpassing ₹1,053 crore. This is a sharp jump from the previous trading session, which saw around 16 million shares change hands.
Adding to the market's focus on IDBI Bank, the company has scheduled a board meeting for October 17, 2026, to approve its financial results for the quarter and half-year ending September 30, 2026. Earlier this month, the bank released its business update for the July-September quarter (Q2FY27), reporting solid growth in core metrics.
According to the update, total deposits increased by 17 percent year-on-year to ₹3,55,611 crore. The bank’s CASA (current and savings accounts) deposits also rose by 12 percent to ₹1,55,882 crore. Net advances climbed by 18 percent year-on-year to ₹2,71,537 crore during the quarter. Consequently, the overall business expanded by 18 percent year-on-year, totaling ₹6,27,149 crore.
The surge in share price is closely linked to the ongoing privatisation process. As reported by PTI at the end of September, the government is actively reviewing financial bids for a strategic stake sale in IDBI Bank, with the process progressing steadily. In July, revised bids were submitted by Fairfax Financial Holdings, led by billionaire Prem Watsa, and Dubai-based Emirates NBD. These bids target a 60.72 percent stake in the bank.
Currently, the government and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) collectively hold a dominant 94.71 percent stake in IDBI Bank. The government’s share amounts to 45.48 percent, while LIC owns 49.24 percent. The planned stake sale involves 60.72 percent of the bank, split evenly between the government’s 30.48 percent and LIC’s 30.24 percent holdings.
On the technical front, Sudeep Shah, head of technical and derivatives research at SBI Securities, pointed out that IDBI Bank’s stock has been trading within a range of ₹79 to ₹96 since June 22, 2026. The moving averages have flattened, indicating a sideways trend, while the declining Average Directional Index (ADX) suggests a lack of strong momentum. Today’s rise to a five-week high could signal a forthcoming breakout, which may provide clearer direction for the stock’s movement.
This development comes amid a broader environment where banks are under pressure to improve business metrics and manage risks effectively. IDBI Bank’s growth in deposits and advances reflects positive operational momentum as it approaches a significant ownership transition. Investors will be closely watching the upcoming financial results and privatisation updates for further indications of the bank’s trajectory.
