SS Retail Shares Jump 6% After Listing at 51% Above IPO Price
Shares of SS Retail continued their upward momentum, rising more than 6 percent to trade at Rs 677 following a robust stock market debut. The company’s shares initially listed at Rs 639.10 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), reflecting a premium of 50.73 percent over the initial public offering (IPO) price of Rs 424 per share. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the stock began trading at Rs 624, representing a 47.17 percent premium to the issue price.
The market response exceeded expectations, with analysts predicting an opening gain of up to 35 percent. Prior to the listing, the stock was noted to carry a grey market premium of approximately 35 percent, indicating strong investor interest and confidence in the company’s prospects.
Shivani Nyati, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, highlighted the factors behind SS Retail’s impressive debut. She pointed out the company's strong return on equity (ROE) and return on capital employed (ROCE) metrics, alongside its asset-light COFO (Company Owned, Franchisee Operated) business model as key strengths. However, Nyati cautioned that the stock’s valuation at around 46.5 times the projected earnings for fiscal year 2026 is relatively high, especially considering the company’s significant exposure to the lower-margin mobile hardware segment. This aspect makes direct comparisons with peers challenging.
Given these valuation concerns, Nyati advised a neutral stance on the stock post-listing. She suggested that new investors might wait for a period of price consolidation before entering, while current shareholders could consider holding their positions with a protective stop-loss set between Rs 575 and Rs 585.
The IPO itself was met with overwhelming demand when it opened for subscription on September 16 and closed on September 18. It received a total subscription of 103.30 times. The qualified institutional buyers (QIB) segment was subscribed 203.61 times, the non-institutional investors (NII) segment 143.32 times, and the retail portion 36.36 times. This strong subscription indicates robust market confidence in SS Retail’s business model and growth potential.
Financially, SS Retail demonstrated significant growth in the fiscal year ending 2026. The company’s total income rose by 47 percent, from Rs 1,600 crore in FY25 to Rs 2,353 crore in FY26. Profit after tax (PAT) increased by 49 percent, moving from Rs 40 crore to Rs 59 crore over the same period. This growth underlines the company’s improving profitability and operational efficiency.
Looking ahead, SS Retail plans to deploy the net proceeds from the IPO towards expanding its store footprint and enhancing working capital. The company earmarked Rs 12.45 crore for capital expenditure related to fit-outs of new stores scheduled for fiscal years 2027 and 2028. Additionally, Rs 241.35 crore will be allocated to fund incremental working capital needs, with the remainder designated for general corporate purposes. The total estimated utilization of the net proceeds stands at Rs 253.80 crore.
Established in June 2016, SS Retail Ltd. operates a multi-brand retail chain primarily focused on mobile phones, accessories, and consumer electronics. Its presence spans across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, and Gujarat, with a focus on Tier II, Tier III, and smaller cities. The mobile retail sector in India continues to grow, driven by increasing smartphone penetration and consumer demand for affordable technology. Companies like SS Retail are well-positioned to capitalize on this trend by targeting emerging markets and smaller cities where demand is rising. Their asset-light franchise model allows for rapid expansion with lower capital expenditure, which is attractive to investors.
