Nifty 50 Down 15% YTD: Experts Share Market Outlook and Sector Picks
The Indian benchmark index Nifty 50 has experienced a 15 percent decline since the beginning of the year and appears likely to close the calendar year with losses. Multiple factors have contributed to this downturn, including elevated crude oil prices caused by tensions between the US and Iran, a mismatch between earnings growth and valuations, foreign capital outflows, absence of momentum from artificial intelligence-related trades, and rising global bond yields.
Looking ahead, uncertainty persists as the US-Iran conflict shows no clear signs of resolution, crude oil prices remain above $100 per barrel, and US Treasury yields stay high amid expectations of further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Additionally, concerns about the growing US government debt continue to weigh on investor sentiment.
Market Experts Offer Insight and Sector Preferences
Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Neo, described the current market environment as challenging with volatility and caution expected to continue in the near term. Despite this, he noted that the gap between negative market sentiment and the underlying valuations is generating opportunities for disciplined, long-term investors.
Chouhan advised investors to avoid trying to time the market perfectly and instead focus on gradually building a diversified portfolio of fundamentally strong companies. He suggested a staggered accumulation strategy to reduce exposure to short-term fluctuations while positioning for a potential recovery.
He projected Nifty 50 earnings per share (EPS) of ₹1,238 for fiscal year 2027 and ₹1,416 for fiscal year 2028. Based on current market levels, the index trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of about 18.5 times FY27 earnings and 16.1 times FY28 earnings, which he considers a reasonable valuation for a one-year investment horizon.
From a technical perspective, Chouhan identified support levels at 22,000 and 21,500, with resistance now lowered from 24,000 to 23,000. A sustained move above 23,000 could enhance market sentiment, whereas falling below 22,000 might increase volatility. Until these thresholds are tested, he recommends a cautious, phased investment approach.
Chouhan highlighted several sectors that appear attractive based on current fundamentals, including banks, capital markets, diversified financials, consumer durables, electronics manufacturing services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, hotels and restaurants, insurance, internet software and services, real estate, telecom, and transportation.
Narendra Solanki, Head of Fundamental Research at Anand Rathi, pointed to global volatility, worsening geopolitical tensions, and inflationary pressures as key concerns weighing on markets. Domestically, rising inflation, the onset of a rate hike cycle, and the possibility of a weaker monsoon impacting growth and fiscal dynamics add to uncertainty.
Solanki favors sectors such as automotive and ancillary industries, banks, power, defense, capital goods, new economy stocks, metals including ferrous and non-ferrous, and healthcare facilities. He views IT, consumer goods, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors as positive over the long term but neutral in the short term.
Pankaj Pandey, Head of Research at ICICI Securities, identified crude oil prices and bond yields as critical factors for a sustained market rally. He stated that unless these come down, other favourable parameters like earnings growth and valuations may not fully translate into positive market momentum.
Among sectors, Pandey expressed optimism about the entire energy value chain, emphasizing the importance of energy security. He also highlighted defense as a sector with stable earnings outlooks globally and domestically, noting that increased private sector participation could enhance performance and differentiation.
In the financial segment, Pandey sees banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) as promising areas capable of delivering returns above the Nifty earnings growth. Additionally, he mentioned premium consumer sectors such as automobiles as well-positioned to perform well.
These insights come amid a complex investment environment marked by geopolitical tensions, inflationary concerns, and evolving market dynamics. Investors are advised to adopt measured strategies, focus on quality companies, and stay attentive to macroeconomic developments.
