HDFC Bank Shares Dip Despite Nifty Bank Rally, Analysts Stay Bullish

HDFC Bank's stock retreated by 2.16 percent on Monday even as the broader Nifty Bank index and the Nifty 50 index made gains. This movement came shortly after the bank announced Anup Bagchi as its new chief executive officer last Thursday. Typically, appointing a new CEO can inject fresh optimism into a company's stock, but in this case, investors appear cautious amid ongoing changes within the bank.

The newly appointed CEO's arrival initially sparked some positive sentiment, yet market participants seem to prefer observing how the transition unfolds before committing more heavily. A recent report from Macquarie highlighted that while HDFC Bank is experiencing growth, it is more concentrated in deposits rather than assets under management (AUM). Additionally, the bank's current account and savings account (CASA) balance remains relatively weak, which is a concern for sustaining low-cost deposit funding.

Despite these concerns, brokerage firms remain optimistic. Macquarie has identified a potential 33 percent increase in the bank’s share price, reflecting confidence in the bank’s long-term prospects. According to Bloomberg data, HDFC Bank, India's largest bank by market capitalization, closed at ₹705.65 on Monday. The bank holds 47 buy ratings and two hold ratings, with an expected return potential of 40.1 percent. Over the past week, 21 brokerages issued 14 buy ratings and five outperform ratings, demonstrating broad support from market analysts.

The Macquarie report provided a detailed look at the bank's performance in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. It noted that the bank’s AUM grew moderately by 15.3 percent year-on-year and 5.8 percent quarter-on-quarter, lagging behind some competitors. Deposits, however, increased by 18.8 percent year-on-year and 4.9 percent quarter-on-quarter, partly driven by a significant inflow of $11.5 billion in foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits. Without these inflows, deposit growth would have been closer to 15 percent year-on-year and only 1.5 percent quarter-on-quarter.

The report further pointed out that growth skewed heavily toward term deposits, while CASA growth was modest. The average CASA balance increased by 10.7 percent year-on-year and 1.5 percent quarter-on-quarter, with period-end CASA reaching ₹1.052 trillion. The loan-to-deposit ratio eased by about 200 basis points year-on-year but showed a slight increase quarter-on-quarter. Macquarie maintained its "outperform" rating on the stock with a target price of ₹875, noting that the new CEO is likely to prioritize revitalizing loan growth, especially in the retail segment, and regaining market share in deposits by strengthening the CASA franchise.

Meanwhile, the broader banking sector showed signs of improvement. The Nifty Bank index ended 0.48 percent higher at 54,714.1, while the Nifty 50 index closed up 0.6 percent at 22,555.75. The BSE Bankex and BSE Sensex also rose by 0.7 percent and 0.66 percent respectively. These gains were supported by strong performances from other major banks such as ICICI Bank, which climbed 1.63 percent, and AU Bank, which surged 4.28 percent. However, the gains in these banks were partially offset by the declines in HDFC Bank and Y Bank.

Somil Mehta, head of retail research at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, commented on the current state of HDFC Bank. He said, "Since 2025, concerns around governance and leadership have led to nearly a 30 percent correction in the bank’s market price. With Anup Bagchi stepping in as CEO, we expect the bank’s performance to improve as he settles in and gains a better understanding of the business. The bank continues to have solid ratings and a strong franchise, so I believe it is a matter of time before these improvements become evident in the financial results."

HDFC Bank plays a crucial role in India's banking landscape given its extensive retail and corporate banking operations. Its ability to maintain steady growth in loans and deposits, particularly CASA, is vital for sustaining profitability and competitive strength. The appointment of a new CEO often signals a strategic shift, and investors are closely monitoring how Bagchi will steer the bank in a challenging economic environment.

As the banking sector navigates a period of recovery and adjustment, HDFC Bank’s stock performance will remain under watch for signs of renewed momentum. Analysts' buy ratings suggest confidence in the bank’s future, but the transition phase calls for patience among investors who hope the new leadership will translate into stronger financial results over time.
