CJ Darcl Logistics Targets 10% Growth, Expands into EVs and Warehousing

CJ Darcl Logistics, a prominent player in India's logistics sector backed by South Korea's CJ Logistics Corporation, anticipates maintaining its strong revenue growth trajectory. The company has recorded a compound annual growth rate of approximately 10 percent over recent years. For the fiscal year 2026, CJ Darcl projected revenues around Rs 5,600 crore, reflecting steady expansion aligned with the country's growing industrial and export activities.

Nikhil Agarwal, president of CJ Darcl Logistics, attributes this positive outlook to several factors, including India's rising manufacturing output and government initiatives designed to stimulate industrial development. Against this backdrop, the company is focusing on three strategic areas to support and diversify its logistics operations.

First, CJ Darcl is developing a technology-driven marketplace tailored to small fleet operators who partner with the company. This platform aims to provide truck owners and drivers access to a range of services and products in one consolidated space. Agarwal emphasized the need for better technological integration, noting that the segment of small fleet truckers often lacks streamlined access to tools that could enhance operational efficiency. The marketplace will also offer digital accounting solutions, including an electronic khata book, to help truckers manage costs related to idling, commissions, and other expenses. Currently, CJ Darcl serves a network of approximately 8 to 10 lakh truckers, with about 2 to 2.5 lakh new trucks joining annually.

The second pillar of CJ Darcl's expansion strategy focuses on sustainability and the adoption of alternative fuels, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). The company is in discussions with clients to identify use cases where electric trucks can operate at high utilization rates, which is critical given that an electric truck presently costs around three times more than a standard 55-tonne diesel truck, the largest truck class in India. Agarwal explained that maximizing the financial viability of EVs depends heavily on intensive asset use. CJ Darcl plans to invest selectively in electric trucks where customer contracts justify the higher upfront costs, while also exploring alternative fuel options to broaden its sustainability efforts.

The third area of growth lies in warehousing and distribution services. CJ Darcl manages roughly 2.78 million square feet of warehouse space across India as of FY26, a segment that has expanded rapidly at an annual rate of 70 to 80 percent over the last two to three years. The company has recently incorporated e-commerce and quick-commerce warehousing solutions into its portfolio, successfully onboarding clients seeking efficient storage and distribution for fast-moving consumer goods and other products.

In terms of freight, CJ Darcl moved 22.42 million tonnes of cargo in FY25. Road transport remains the core of its business, complemented by rail and coastal logistics operations. The company has operated multimodal rail container services for nearly 20 years and entered the coastal logistics market a decade ago, demonstrating a diversified approach to cargo transportation.

Regarding demand trends, Agarwal noted a slowdown in metals and minerals sectors, while FMCG volumes have remained stable. Some customers have experienced declines in business compared to the previous year, which he attributed to various factors including fluctuations in industrial production and sales. Rising crude oil prices have increased diesel costs, pushing freight rates higher. While CJ Darcl typically passes diesel cost increases to contract logistics clients, elevated shipping and freight expenses could eventually dampen industrial demand.

Freight rate adjustments are already visible in long-haul segments due to higher diesel prices. Meanwhile, a rise in commercial vehicle sales may add capacity, potentially leading to freight rate corrections within one or two quarters. This dynamic highlights the sensitive balance between supply and demand in India's logistics market.

CJ Darcl is also exploring inorganic growth opportunities, particularly through acquisitions in newer business verticals like warehousing. Such moves could expand the company’s customer base and geographical reach, while enhancing its road and multimodal freight capabilities.

On the company's planned initial public offering, Agarwal confirmed that the Draft Red Herring Prospectus has been filed and approved, though the final issue will depend on market conditions and banking partners. CJ Logistics, the South Korean parent, will not be a selling shareholder. The parent company supports CJ Darcl with expertise in warehousing, technology, artificial intelligence, and the trucker marketplace, in addition to facilitating global client relationships through its presence in 38 countries.

Infrastructure improvements in India, such as port expansions, rail terminal enhancements, and initiatives like Gati Shakti, have contributed to a more efficient logistics ecosystem. Agarwal also pointed out that increasing adoption of technology and data analytics could further enhance operational efficiency. Despite progress, the logistics sector remains fragmented, which adds to overall costs and presents opportunities for integrated service providers like CJ Darcl to streamline supply chains.
