Cabinet OKs ₹2,009 Crore Bonus for Over 1.14 Million Railway Workers

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for a productivity-linked bonus amounting to ₹2,009.61 crore to be distributed among more than 1.14 million railway employees. This bonus corresponds to 78 days of wages and recognises the efforts of non-gazetted railway staff during the financial year 2025-26.

According to an official release, the bonus will be paid to exactly 1,140,770 non-gazetted railway personnel. The highest bonus payable to an individual employee is capped at ₹17,951. This annual bonus is traditionally disbursed before the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays, aiming to reward and encourage the workforce to maintain and improve operational efficiency.

The employees eligible for this bonus include a wide range of roles within the Indian Railways. These roles encompass track maintainers, locomotive pilots, train managers (also known as guards), station masters, supervisors, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, ministerial staff, and other Group C employees. The government highlights that this incentive recognises their valuable contribution in enhancing the overall performance of the rail network.

This recent decision from the Cabinet follows a year marked by strong operational achievements by Indian Railways. During the 2025-26 financial year, the railways transported an all-time high of 1,670 million tonnes of freight. Passenger traffic also grew significantly, reaching approximately 7.41 billion travelers.

Indian Railways serves as one of the largest rail networks in the world, playing a crucial role in the country’s transportation infrastructure by moving vast numbers of passengers and freight every year. Encouraging productivity among its workforce is essential for its continued growth and efficiency.

The productivity-linked bonus functions as a motivational tool, incentivising employees to sustain and build on their contributions toward the railways' performance goals. By linking part of the employees’ compensation to operational results, the government hopes to foster a culture of accountability and dedication within the organization.

In recent years, Indian Railways has been focusing on modernisation, safety improvements, and expanding its freight capacity. These efforts not only support economic activity but also aim to improve customer experience across its vast passenger network.

With the bonus scheme in place, the government is reinforcing its commitment to reward frontline staff who are integral to the functioning of the railway system. As Indian Railways continues to evolve and meet growing transportation demands, recognising employee efforts remains a key component of its strategy.

The timely announcement and disbursal of the bonus ahead of significant festive seasons also reflect the government's intention to support the welfare of railway employees, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds and serve in challenging conditions across the country.

Overall, this development highlights the government's approach to balancing operational success with employee incentives, ensuring that the workforce remains motivated as Indian Railways targets further growth and enhanced service delivery in the years ahead.
