Vedanta Demerger Review: Mixed Performances Among Spin-Offs After 3 Months

More than three months have passed since Vedanta Limited completed its corporate demerger, resulting in four newly listed entities alongside the residual Vedanta Limited itself. The stock performances of these companies have varied significantly since their market debut, reflecting differing sector dynamics and investor responses.

The demerger became effective on May 1, with the carve-out entities officially listed on June 15. In the immediate aftermath, Vedanta Limited experienced strong buying interest, pushing its price close to ₹360. However, broader market movements brought the stock into a sideways range between ₹260 and ₹290 in the following months. According to Mayank Jain, Market Analyst at Share.Market by PhonePe, this pattern is characteristic of post-demerger value adjustments combined with prevailing market consolidation.

Vedanta Aluminium Metal emerged as the standout performer on listing day, debuting at ₹522 per share and becoming the largest entity by market value among the new companies. Despite this auspicious start, the stock has since seen a decline of 3.16% over the three months, closing recently at ₹437.90 on the BSE. Notably, it gained nearly 8% in the last two weeks, signaling some recovery. Jain notes that the company’s backward integration strategy, involving captive alumina and coal resources, positions it well for margin improvements as global metal prices stabilize.

Vedanta Iron and Steel showed signs of short-term strength, propelled by consecutive upper circuit limits shortly after listing. The stock closed at ₹32.97, up 4.83% on BSE, with a market capitalization of approximately ₹12,893 crore. Over the quarter, the stock appreciated by 1.6%. Senior Technical Research Analyst Virat Jagad of Bonanza explained that despite an overall bearish market trend, the stock is attempting to establish a base between ₹30 and ₹31. The relative strength index (RSI) around 42.7 suggests some momentum recovery, and a move above ₹33.5 could indicate a more sustained uptrend.

Vedanta Power has experienced a more challenging period, with its share price falling 17.13% over the past three months to ₹34.31, despite a recent one-week jump of 10.4%. It currently holds a market capitalization of ₹13,417 crore. Jain describes the power business as delivering steady, utility-like earnings with relatively low operational volatility, often providing a defensive position during wider market downturns.

Vedanta Oil and Gas showed modest gains of 2.47% over three months, closing at ₹34.07 per share with a market cap of ₹13,323 crore. However, it faced a 2.66% dip in the last week. Jain points out that the company’s performance remains closely linked to global crude oil price fluctuations and the execution progress of its field development projects, which keeps the stock range-bound.

The demerger of Vedanta Limited into focused business units reflects a broader trend among conglomerates aiming to unlock shareholder value by creating specialized entities. This approach allows investors to better assess individual business models and their growth potential. However, each sector’s unique market dynamics influence stock performance post-listing.

In summary, Vedanta Aluminium initially captured investor enthusiasm but has faced some volatility since. Vedanta Iron and Steel displayed promising recovery signs, while Vedanta Power struggled with a notable decline despite recent gains. Vedanta Oil and Gas remains sensitive to external commodity price influences. Vedanta Limited itself experienced early gains after the split but has settled into a consolidation phase. These developments highlight the varied paths of companies adapting to their new independent identities in competitive sectors.
