Sensex Surges Over 900 Points as Nifty Reclaims 22,800 Mark Amid IT Rally
The Indian stock market witnessed a robust rally on Thursday with the Sensex climbing more than 900 points during the trading session. The benchmark Nifty50 index also regained the 22,800 level, buoyed by a strong performance in the information technology (IT) sector and a decline in Brent crude oil prices.
At around 10:00 AM, the Sensex was trading at 73,610.88, up 828.99 points or 1.14 percent, while the Nifty50 index rose 244.20 points, or 1.08 percent, reaching 22,866.90. This upward momentum was largely driven by gains in major IT companies, which helped boost investor sentiment.
The Nifty IT index extended its winning streak for a third consecutive day, advancing 2.10 percent to 30,805.70 points. Leading the charge were Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and HCLTech, which delivered solid gains. Tech Mahindra also contributed positively, helping lift the sector as the top performing segment in early trades.
Other notable market movements included Tata Technologies shares, which surged over 8 percent to ₹807.55 per share despite reporting a 5.2 percent year-on-year decline in net profit for the second quarter of fiscal 2027 (Q2FY27). This price jump suggests investor confidence in the company's future prospects despite the short-term dip in profitability.
On the downside, state-owned Canara Bank shares dropped by 7 percent after releasing its Q2FY27 results. The bank reported only marginal growth in operating profit, rising slightly to ₹8,758 crore compared to ₹8,588 crore in the same quarter last year. The decline in treasury income was cited as a key factor weighing on earnings.
HDB Financial Services also experienced selling pressure, with shares falling nearly 5 percent to ₹556.30 per share on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). This dip came despite the company posting positive financial results for the quarter, indicating cautious investor sentiment.
The broader market showed mixed trends as the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices declined by 0.25 percent and 0.79 percent respectively, underperforming the benchmark Nifty50. Public sector banks also faced selling pressure, with the Nifty PSU Bank index registering the steepest losses among sectors.
Investors are also awaiting the Q2FY27 earnings announcements from several prominent companies, including Wipro India and Nestle India, as well as 47 other firms scheduled to report their quarterly results on Thursday. These earnings reports are expected to provide further direction to the market in the coming sessions.
The fall in Brent crude prices, which dropped by about 1 percent, added to the positive sentiment in the market. Lower oil prices generally reduce input costs for many companies and ease inflationary pressures, factors that can encourage buying activity among investors.
In summary, Thursday's trading session reflected a strong preference for IT stocks, which continue to outperform other sectors amid ongoing digital transformation and demand for technology services. Meanwhile, some public sector banks and financial services stocks faced downward pressure, highlighting a divergence within the market.
The current rally comes at a time when market participants are closely monitoring corporate earnings and global commodity prices, both of which play influential roles in shaping investor confidence. As the quarter progresses, the performance of key sectors like IT and banking will remain crucial for market direction.
