India’s Economy Grows Strongly Amid West Asia Crisis, PM Modi Highlights Renewable Energy Goals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the challenges posed by the ongoing West Asia crisis and detailed India's ambitious renewable energy targets during the opening session of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 on Monday. Despite global disruptions, Modi emphasized that India’s economic growth remains strong and resilient.

He revealed that India’s current non-fossil fuel energy capacity has surpassed 300 gigawatts (GW). Looking ahead, the country aims to nearly double this figure by adding approximately 500 GW of renewable energy capacity over the next decade. Modi acknowledged that achieving this is a formidable task but insisted it is essential for the nation's energy security and sustainability.

"If India had not invested in renewable energy over the past ten years, the energy crisis faced today could be far worse than in many other regions," Modi remarked. The West Asia conflict earlier this year disrupted global energy supplies, creating difficulties for numerous countries dependent on fossil fuels. India’s prior investments in clean energy helped cushion the economic impact.

Modi also invited domestic and international investors to consider India as a prime destination for renewable energy investment. He highlighted the country’s stable political climate and consistent policy framework as key advantages. The prime minister projected that investment opportunities in renewable energy could exceed ₹20 lakh crore by the end of this decade.

India ranks among the top three nations worldwide in the solar and renewable energy sectors. Modi underscored the importance of integrating solar power into government infrastructure and public services, including government buildings, schools, colleges, hospitals, and street lighting systems.

"We must develop indigenous energy storage solutions and enhance battery storage capacity to support renewable expansion," Modi said, pointing to the critical role of technology innovation in achieving energy goals.

Significant progress is also underway in India’s green hydrogen initiatives. Modi mentioned the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets an annual production capacity of 50 lakh tonnes. Green hydrogen is expected to play a vital role in decarbonizing heavy industry and transportation sectors.

The development of the Green Energy Corridor, comprising interstate transmission lines, was another focus of Modi’s address. This infrastructure is designed to facilitate the efficient evacuation of power generated from renewable sources across states. The government has allocated ₹2 trillion for the second phase of this project, reflecting a strong commitment to strengthening the grid and integrating renewable energy at scale.

Highlighting tangible outcomes, Modi noted that over 44,000 government buildings have already been equipped with solar power installations. This initiative has yielded annual savings of around ₹700 crore, demonstrating the economic benefits of transitioning to clean energy.

India’s energy strategy centers on clean power as the foundation for future energy security. The country’s efforts align with global trends toward sustainability and climate change mitigation. By aggressively pursuing renewable energy expansion, India seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, curb emissions, and ensure a stable energy supply for its growing economy.

This ambitious roadmap comes at a time when many nations are reassessing their energy policies amid geopolitical tensions and environmental concerns. India’s approach combines large-scale renewable capacity development, technological innovation, and infrastructure enhancement to position itself as a leader in the global clean energy transition.
