Fairfax Financial Expands India Presence with Major IDBI Bank Stake Purchase
The Indian Cabinet has given the green light to Fairfax Financial Holdings to acquire a 60.72 percent stake in IDBI Bank for ₹52,878 crore, marking a significant step in Fairfax's growth within India's financial services landscape. This transaction will considerably enhance the Canadian conglomerate's influence in the country's banking sector.
Fairfax Financial's investments in India are extensive and diversified. Through its subsidiary, FIH Mauritius Investments, the company held a 40 percent share in CSB Bank and a 26.8 percent stake in IIFL Capital Services as of June 2026. Additionally, Fairfax maintained holdings of 24.5 percent in 5paisa Capital and 13.6 percent in IIFL Finance by September of the same year. These investments show Fairfax's strategic approach to building a broad portfolio across retail banking, financial services, and capital markets in India.
Furthermore, Fairfax's interests extend beyond traditional banking. Via FAL Corporation, the company owned a 65 percent stake in Valueattics Re, India's first privately owned domestic reinsurer, as of March 2026. This investment underlines Fairfax's commitment to the growing insurance and reinsurance sector in India. The company also holds a 49 percent stake in Go Digit Infoworks Services Ltd, recorded on June 30, 2026. Go Digit Infoworks is the promoter entity behind Go Digit General Insurance, highlighting Fairfax's involvement in the digital insurance space.
Fairfax's footprint in India is not limited to financial services alone. The company has exposure to the specialty chemicals sector through Fairchem Organics, a manufacturer of niche chemical products. As of September 2026, FIH Mauritius Investments controlled 54.6 percent of Fairchem Organics, with FIH Private Investments holding an additional 2.6 percent. This investment diversifies Fairfax's portfolio and reflects confidence in India's manufacturing and specialty chemicals industries.
The acquisition of the majority stake in IDBI Bank is a major milestone for Fairfax Financial. IDBI Bank, a prominent public sector bank, has been undergoing significant restructuring and strategic repositioning. Fairfax's takeover is expected to bring fresh capital, governance, and private-sector expertise to the bank. This move aligns with broader trends of increasing private investment in India's financial institutions, which are seeking to improve efficiency, expand services, and compete in a dynamic market.
India's financial services sector has been attracting global investors due to its rapid growth potential, driven by a young population, expanding middle class, and increasing digital adoption. Fairfax's deepening involvement reflects confidence in India's long-term economic prospects. The company’s portfolio across banking, insurance, financial technology, and specialty chemicals positions it well to benefit from multiple growth avenues.
With the Cabinet's approval finalized on October 14, 2026, this deal is expected to close after satisfying regulatory and shareholder requirements. Fairfax Financial's increased presence in India underscores its strategy to build a multi-sector empire in one of the world's fastest-growing economies.
This development is significant for stakeholders across the Indian financial ecosystem. It highlights the government's openness to strategic private investment in state-owned entities and signals a potential shift in how public sector banks are managed and capitalized going forward.
