ICICI Lombard Q2FY27 Net Profit Rises 15.5% to ₹946 Crore on Premium Growth

ICICI Lombard General Insurance, one of India’s leading private-sector general insurers, posted a 15.5 percent increase in net profit for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company reported a net profit of ₹946.4 crore for the July to September period, up from ₹819.54 crore in the same quarter last year. This growth was largely fueled by gains in premium collections and investment income, even as underwriting losses expanded.

During the quarter, the insurer's gross written premium rose 9.11 percent year-on-year to ₹7,702 crore. More notably, net premium income climbed 17.7 percent to ₹6,651.87 crore, highlighting strong demand in its core insurance products. These figures underscore ICICI Lombard's growing market presence amid a competitive insurance landscape.

Despite these positive top-line developments, the company experienced a broadening in underwriting losses. The underwriting deficit widened to ₹318.4 crore in Q2FY27, compared to ₹178.4 crore in the same quarter a year earlier. This increase suggests that claims and related expenses outpaced premium growth during the period.

The combined ratio, a key measure of underwriting profitability representing the sum of incurred claims and operating expenses as a percentage of earned premiums, rose to 107 percent from 105.1 percent in the previous year’s quarter. A combined ratio above 100 percent indicates an underwriting loss, meaning the insurer paid out more in claims and expenses than it earned from premiums. ICICI Lombard's incurred claims ratio edged slightly higher to 72.7 percent from 72.1 percent, while its expense ratio increased to 36.3 percent from 31.9 percent, reflecting higher costs associated with managing the business.

Operational expenses also showed a noticeable rise. Total expenses climbed 19.55 percent year-on-year to ₹6,970.2 crore, with commission-related costs increasing by 25.3 percent to ₹1,269 crore. This rise in commission expenses may relate to ICICI Lombard’s efforts to expand its distribution network and acquire new customers.

On a positive note, the company’s solvency ratio, an indicator of its financial health and ability to meet long-term obligations, remained strong at 275 percent, slightly up from 273 percent the previous year. This level is well above regulatory requirements, providing a comfortable buffer for future uncertainties.

The board of directors declared an interim dividend of ₹7 per share for the first half of FY27, signaling confidence in the company’s cash flow and profitability despite the mixed underwriting results.

ICICI Lombard operates in a sector that has seen rising demand for insurance products due to increasing awareness and regulatory push for greater risk coverage. However, the general insurance industry often faces pressures from rising claim costs and competitive pricing, which can affect underwriting margins. The company’s ability to maintain premium growth while managing claims and expenses will be important in sustaining profitability in the coming quarters.

Overall, ICICI Lombard’s Q2FY27 performance reflects a balance of strong revenue expansion with challenges on the underwriting front. As it continues to navigate market dynamics, the insurer’s financial and operational strategies will be closely watched by investors and industry observers alike.
