Axis Mutual Fund Launches Affordable EV & New Age Auto Index Fund

Axis Mutual Fund has recently opened subscriptions for its new offering, the Axis Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Index Fund. This open-ended passive equity scheme is designed to track the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive Total Returns Index (TRI) and aims to provide investors with exposure across the electric mobility and automotive technology sectors. The new fund offer (NFO) will be available until October 30, 2026, and allows investors to start with a minimum investment of just Rs 100, with subsequent investments permitted in multiples of Rs 1.

Electric mobility is gaining momentum in India, supported by favorable policies and increasing consumer acceptance. According to data shared by Axis Mutual Fund, electric vehicle penetration in the country has surged from below 1 percent in the fiscal year 2020-21 to 9.4 percent by 2025-26. This rising adoption reflects a significant shift in the automotive industry, signaling new investment opportunities. However, potential investors should approach this thematic fund with caution and not assume that industry growth will automatically translate into positive investment returns.

The fund seeks to mirror the performance of its underlying index by investing in the same companies included in the Nifty EV & New Age Automotive TRI, while managing tracking error. The index comprises companies involved in multiple segments of the electric vehicle and automotive ecosystem. These include electric vehicle manufacturers, battery producers, automotive component suppliers, raw material providers, and firms specializing in automotive technology. In addition, companies that qualify under specified government schemes and meet index criteria are included.

Constituents of the index are selected from the broader Nifty 500 universe after liquidity and eligibility filters are applied. The index undergoes rebalancing twice annually, in March and September. As of September 30, 2026, the index allocation was split between largecap companies at 44 percent, midcap stocks at 29 percent, and smallcap firms at 27 percent. This diversified market-cap composition means the fund is not solely reliant on established large companies but also includes smaller firms. Such exposure can lead to greater volatility, especially during periods when markets experience downward pressure.

Unlike actively managed funds where portfolio managers pick stocks aiming to outperform benchmarks, the Axis EV & New Age Automotive Index Fund follows a set index. Its goal is to replicate the index’s returns before expenses, accounting for dividends and stock price movements, though tracking error can cause some deviation. The fund’s holdings and their weightings closely mirror the index constituents. The scheme will be managed by portfolio managers Nandik Malik and Rohit Gautam.

Investors should note that the fund carries an exit load of 0.25 percent if units are redeemed or switched out within 15 days of allotment. No exit load applies after this period.

While the expanding electric vehicle market provides compelling growth prospects for companies involved in vehicle production, battery manufacturing, component supply, and automotive technologies, investing in this niche area involves specific risks. The sector’s growth does not guarantee profitable returns for all companies within the theme. Factors such as business execution, competition, production efficiency, and valuation levels will also impact performance.

Thematic funds like this one concentrate investments in a single industry or theme, which can increase risk compared to diversified equity funds that spread exposure across multiple sectors. Market events such as regulatory changes, supply chain interruptions, or a slowdown in vehicle demand could simultaneously affect many firms in the index. Additionally, with over half of the index comprising midcap and smallcap stocks, investors should be prepared for potentially higher price fluctuations.

Passive investing via an index fund does not eliminate market risk. The fund’s value will fluctuate in line with the underlying stocks, and tracking error may cause returns to differ from the benchmark. Axis Mutual Fund positions this scheme as a tool for investors seeking long-term participation in the evolving automotive industry. Potential investors are advised to consider their risk tolerance, investment horizon, and current asset allocation before investing.

As with any thematic investment, it is prudent to treat this fund as part of a broader diversified portfolio rather than a replacement for general equity exposure. Prospective investors should carefully review the scheme information document to understand the investment strategy, associated costs, and risks. Axis Mutual Fund has not guaranteed returns, and the investment objective of this scheme may not be met.
