Key Factors Influencing Indian Stock Market Movement on Wednesday

Indian equity markets experienced a downturn on Tuesday, reversing earlier gains to close with notable losses. The benchmark Sensex dropped 330 points, finishing the day at 74,529, while the Nifty index saw a sharp intra-day fall during the futures and options expiry session, briefly plunging about 1 percent from 23,349.5 to 23,133 before partially recovering to close at 23,329.

Market analysts highlighted the heightened volatility as investors reacted to a mix of domestic and international influences. Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer at PL Capital, described the day's trading as a pullback after initial strength, with selling pressure intensifying at elevated levels. According to Kasat, the Nifty is currently oscillating in the 23,300 to 23,350 range, while the Sensex is hovering between 74,500 and 74,700.

Information technology stocks came under pressure amid concerns about demand prospects. Brent crude oil prices, which had declined over the previous four trading sessions, rebounded to a range near $99 to $100 per barrel, adding to inflation and input cost worries for Indian firms. Foreign portfolio investors continued to withdraw funds, reflecting ongoing geopolitical uncertainties that have kept market sentiment cautious.

The Indian rupee remained steady around 95.8 against the US dollar, while precious metals like gold and silver showed volatility due to shifting expectations regarding global interest rates. Kasat advised investors to be prudent, suggesting avoidance of chasing short-lived rallies. Instead, he recommended staggered investments in fundamentally sound companies with clear earnings visibility, maintaining portfolio diversification, and preserving liquidity to take advantage of meaningful market corrections.

In global markets, the US Nasdaq Composite reached an intraday record high not seen since early June, driven by strong gains in tech giants such as Alphabet, the parent company of Gemini. Positive developments on the geopolitical front boosted market optimism, particularly news that Iran might reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the US eases pressure. Saudi Arabia also resumed operations on its East-West Pipeline, easing some supply concerns.

Despite these developments, Brent crude prices eased by 1.2 percent but remained close to the $100 mark. The yield on the US 10-year Treasury held near 4.9 percent, levels that have recently weighed on global equities. Investors are now focusing on an upcoming high-profile meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which is expected to provide clues on the trajectory of US-China relations, a critical factor for global markets.

European markets showed moderate gains, with the STOXX 600 index rising 0.5 percent, extending the previous day’s rally. Semiconductor stocks led the gains, while energy shares slipped following the news of Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

On the Indian National Stock Exchange, HDFC Bank, Meesho, Pine Labs, Reliance Industries, Gabriel India, Kaynes Technologies, and the Bombay Stock Exchange were among the top stocks by value traded. Vodafone Idea, Meesho, JP Power, Pine Labs, Ola Electric, IFCI, and Suzlon Energy were the most active by volume.

Stocks attracting notable buying interest included Gabriel India, Meesho, Sun TV, Jain Resource Recycling, Engineers India, RBL Bank, and JSW Infrastructure. Several companies, such as Engineers India, RBL Bank, JSW Infrastructure, Welspun India, Syrma SGS Technologies, ACME Solar Holdings, and Laurus Labs, hit 52-week highs during the session.

Conversely, Ami Organics, Kaynes Technologies, Aegis Vopak Terminals, Aegis Logistics, Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Apar Industries, and Craftsman Automation faced selling pressure. Stocks reaching 52-week lows included Voltas, Britannia Industries, Tata Elxsi, Tata Consumer Products, KPIT Technologies, United Breweries, and IRB Infrastructure Developers.

Market breadth indicated a bearish tilt, with 1,868 of the 3,670 stocks traded on the NSE declining, 1,679 advancing, and 123 remaining unchanged on Tuesday.

Investors are advised to review detailed research reports and consult registered financial advisors before making investment decisions, as the views expressed by individual analysts may vary from official market commentary.
