The Indian stock market saw notable fluctuations on Monday, with the Sensex declining by around 200 points and the Nifty50 slipping below the 2,500 mark. Investors faced mixed signals across sectors as some stocks posted significant gains while others encountered selling pressure.

At 10:00 AM, the Sensex was recorded down by approximately 139 points, standing at 72,333.32, while the Nifty50 edged lower by 5.7 points to 22,514.75. Despite the overall dip, the broader markets showed pockets of strength. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices both registered gains of 0.26 percent and 0.94 percent respectively, indicating some investor interest in smaller companies.

Sector-wise, the performance was varied. The Nifty Media index posted a strong advance of 2.45 percent, with the Nifty Auto index also rising by 1.21 percent. Among the top performers in the Sensex 30 were Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharat Electronics, Trent, Bajaj Finance, and Tata Steel. Conversely, Tech Mahindra experienced a sharp decline of 4.5 percent, marking it as the largest loser in the index on the day.

Shares of Waterways Leisure Tourism attracted buyers following a remarkable jump in the company’s second-quarter results for the fiscal year 2027. The firm reported a net profit of ₹58.5 crore, a dramatic increase of over 500 percent compared to ₹8.9 crore during the same quarter last year. This strong performance helped Waterways Leisure's stock rise by nearly 10 percent, reaching an intraday high of ₹111.07 on the National Stock Exchange.

Meanwhile, several large public sector banks (PSUs) faced declines. Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, and Canara Bank were among the biggest underperformers within the Nifty PSU Bank segment, reflecting cautious sentiment toward the sector amid ongoing economic concerns.

Investor attention also turned to the technology and consumer sectors. HCL Technologies shares traded with slight gains as market participants awaited the company’s upcoming Q2 earnings report. Analysts anticipate steady revenue growth and stable margins, with some expecting the firm to raise its future revenue forecasts. On the other hand, Lenskart Solutions saw its stock price fall by as much as 5 percent following large volume trades, closing near ₹643.75 on the NSE.

Avenue Supermarts, the parent company of Dmart, experienced a drop exceeding 4 percent after releasing its Q2 financial results. The decline was triggered by a reduction in operating margins during the quarter, with shares touching an intraday low of ₹3,365.60.

In global tech news, Amazon Inc. is reportedly in talks to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart. According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal could be valued at around ₹7 billion. This move highlights Amazon's ongoing efforts to bolster its AI capabilities amid rising competition in the technology space.

The day’s trading activity underscores the mixed market sentiment currently prevailing in India’s equity markets. While strong quarterly performances from select companies and sectoral gains in media and autos provided some support, concerns over PSU banks and specific IT and retail stocks weighed on overall indices.

Market participants will likely monitor upcoming corporate earnings and macroeconomic data closely for further direction. With technology firms gearing up to report results and consumer-facing companies adjusting to changing market dynamics, the stock market remains poised for continued volatility in the near term.
