Rocket Lab Shares Jump Over 8% on Neutron Launch Plans and Iridium Deal
Shares of Rocket Lab (RKLB) climbed sharply by 8.2 percent, closing at $69.89 on September 21, fueled by investor optimism around the company’s upcoming Neutron rocket launch and its strategic acquisition of Iridium Communications. The boost came shortly after Cantor Fitzgerald reaffirmed its Overweight rating on Rocket Lab stock and set a price target of $122.
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard pointed to two major factors driving the stock’s upward momentum. First is Rocket Lab’s initial mission of the Neutron medium-lift rocket, which is scheduled for later this year. This launch represents a significant step for the company’s expansion into the medium-lift space launch market. Second, Sheppard highlighted the anticipated closure of Rocket Lab’s acquisition of Iridium Communications, expected by mid-2027, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
On September 19, Rocket Lab successfully completed its 96th Electron rocket launch, marking the 17th mission for 2026. This particular flight deployed Synspective’s 12th StriX satellite into orbit at an altitude of 572 kilometers. The achievement demonstrates Rocket Lab’s consistent operational capabilities and ongoing demand for its launch services.
Sheppard also noted Rocket Lab’s robust infrastructure, including its dedicated launch facilities and a diverse customer base. Additionally, the company’s expanding rocket portfolio supports a positive growth outlook as it advances into new markets and service offerings within the space sector.
To finance the Iridium acquisition, Rocket Lab raised nearly $1.944 billion through an at-the-market share offering, issuing roughly 29.3 million shares. This capital raise, combined with Iridium’s existing term loan and cash reserves, will fund the transaction. The acquisition is aimed at creating synergies by integrating Rocket Lab’s launch and spacecraft operations with Iridium’s satellite communications network, potentially broadening the company’s revenue opportunities.
Investors are closely monitoring Rocket Lab as it approaches several critical milestones. These include the debut Neutron rocket launch, the finalization of the Iridium deal, and ongoing Electron missions. The company reported a record backlog of $2.36 billion and demonstrated sustained revenue growth alongside improved launch economics in its second quarter 2026 financial results.
Rocket Lab’s progress is notable in the context of the competitive and rapidly evolving space launch industry. As private companies continue to innovate and expand satellite deployment capabilities, Rocket Lab’s strategic moves position it to capture a larger share of the growing market for space-based services.
While analyst opinions remain independent and do not reflect the views of The Economic Times, the heightened investor interest underscores confidence in Rocket Lab’s future prospects amid an active period of technological and commercial developments.
