IDBI-Fairfax Deal Pushes India's PE-VC Investments Past $8 Billion in October
Private Equity and Venture Capital (PE-VC) investments in India saw a remarkable surge in October 2026, crossing the $8 billion mark. This significant growth was largely fueled by the landmark $5.6 billion equity injection into IDBI Bank by Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings. The deal represents one of the largest private equity investments in India in recent years and played a pivotal role in boosting overall investment volumes.
Data from Venture Intelligence, a market research firm tracking investment trends, reveals that the total investment value for October reached over $8 billion spread across 106 deals. This figure not only exceeded the $6.1 billion recorded in September but also marked the highest monthly investment level seen in more than four years.
When compared year-on-year, the increase is substantial. In October 2025, PE-VC investments totaled $5.5 billion over 136 deals, showing a near 50 percent rise in value despite a slight drop in the number of transactions. The sharp rise in investment size demonstrates renewed confidence among institutional investors and a growing appetite for large-scale opportunities.
Besides the IDBI-Fairfax transaction, other mega deals contributed significantly to the investment total. Five deals in October alone crossed the $100 million threshold, collectively accounting for $7 billion of the total capital deployed. Among these were KKR’s $632 million investment in Gentari, the renewable energy division of Malaysia’s state-owned company PETRONAS, and Brookfield’s $450 million acquisition of ESR India’s logistics and industrial portfolio.
Arun Natarajan, the founder of Venture Intelligence, highlighted the importance of the IDBI-Fairfax deal, calling it the largest private equity investment in India since 2020. He also pointed out that infrastructure sectors remained a key focus for large private equity players throughout the month, indicating sustained interest in areas crucial to the country’s economic growth.
Looking at the broader picture for 2026, PE-VC activity has accelerated notably from August through October after a slow start earlier in the year. Year-to-date figures show that investments have reached $39.7 billion across 1,171 deals, already surpassing the total of $39 billion across 1,425 deals recorded for the entire 2025 calendar year. This trend suggests a robust and recovering investment environment, with increasing capital flow into diverse sectors.
Investment patterns within stages of company growth revealed some shifts in October. Early-stage funding climbed to $377 million from $304 million in the same month last year, signaling continued support for startups and emerging businesses. However, growth-stage investments experienced a decline, dropping to $584 million from $1 billion, while late-stage funding also decreased significantly to $240 million compared to $1.4 billion in October 2025. These changes may reflect evolving investor strategies and market conditions impacting how capital is allocated among different company maturity levels.
The surge in large-scale deals and renewed investor interest underscore the dynamic nature of India’s private equity and venture capital landscape. As the country continues to develop critical infrastructure and expand its renewable energy capacity, the investment community appears to be responding with increased commitments. This momentum is likely to play a crucial role in supporting economic growth and innovation throughout the remainder of 2026 and beyond.
