Petronet LNG Limited (PLL), a leading player in India’s liquefied natural gas sector, has joined forces with Gruner Renewable Energy through an equal joint venture to develop a series of compressed biogas (CBG) plants. The collaboration aims to invest ₹1,200 crore in establishing 10 CBG facilities across the country, marking a notable step in expanding Petronet LNG’s footprint within the renewable energy domain.

Petronet LNG has built a strong reputation in India’s LNG and natural gas infrastructure, and this new partnership signals its commitment to diversifying into renewable gas options. Gruner Renewable Energy will play a central role in managing the sourcing of feedstock, as well as overseeing engineering, procurement, construction, operations, maintenance, and the sale of organic manure, effectively covering the entire CBG value chain.

Each plant is designed to process 18 tonnes of organic waste daily, which means the combined capacity of all 10 plants will reach approximately 180 tonnes per day. This scale of operation is significant for India’s compressed biogas industry and could help establish a more organized and commercially viable ecosystem for CBG production and distribution.

According to Gruner Renewable, this joint venture model is unprecedented in India. By integrating every stage from feedstock procurement to end-product distribution, the partnership expects to bring structure, scale, advanced technology, and institutional support to the sector. The venture’s success will depend heavily on securing stable feedstock supplies, financing arrangements, and reliable offtake contracts, all of which are critical for commercial sustainability.

Compressed biogas is gaining traction as a renewable fuel alternative, particularly complementing natural gas for industrial, transportation, and commercial applications. Petronet LNG’s established network in gas infrastructure and energy markets positions it well to support the growth of CBG while tapping into emerging renewable energy opportunities.

Moreover, the joint venture could facilitate better evaluation and funding of multiple CBG projects, which require substantial initial capital and extended timelines for implementation. By combining their expertise and resources, Petronet LNG and Gruner Renewable aim to overcome these challenges and accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner fuel sources.

The initiative also promises broader economic benefits. By converting agricultural residues and other organic waste into compressed biogas, the projects can contribute to waste management solutions and generate new income streams for farmers and local communities. Additionally, the development of CBG plants is expected to create employment opportunities across sectors such as agriculture, logistics, engineering, and energy.

India has been actively promoting renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions and dependency on fossil fuels. The government’s support for bioenergy projects like CBG aligns with its climate goals and energy security priorities. This joint venture reflects the growing interest among energy companies to invest in sustainable fuel technologies and build infrastructure that can support India’s evolving energy landscape.

As the partnership moves forward, the focus will be on successfully executing the planned projects and establishing a reliable supply chain. If implemented effectively, these CBG plants could serve as a model for future renewable gas ventures and help position India as a leader in biogas innovation.

In summary, the collaboration between Petronet LNG and Gruner Renewable Energy represents a meaningful advancement in the renewable energy sector. The ₹1,200 crore investment in compressed biogas plants not only supports environmental goals but also opens avenues for economic growth and enhanced energy security in India.
