Odisha Plans 290 New EV Charging Stations under PM E-DRIVE Scheme

The Odisha government has put forward a plan to establish 290 new public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in thirteen cities throughout the state. This initiative is part of the PM E-DRIVE scheme, aimed at expanding the EV infrastructure network. Officials confirmed the proposal submission on Wednesday, highlighting the state's commitment to supporting electric mobility.

Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena has directed this move to strengthen Odisha's EV charging capacity. The state's initial phase under the PM E-DRIVE scheme saw the approval of 170 charging stations in seven key cities, with installation work currently progressing. Building on this foundation, Odisha is now focusing on the second phase, which will cover more locations and enhance accessibility for EV users.

The proposed 290 stations will be distributed across cities including Rourkela, Talcher, Sambalpur, Paradip, Barbil, Balpahad, Berhampur, Brajarajnagar, Chhatrapur, Jharsuguda, Joda, Keonjhar, and Rajgangpur. Additionally, several sites along national and state highways have been selected to ensure comprehensive coverage for long-distance travelers.

A notable portion of these new stations, 68 in total, are planned for Wayside Amenity Centres managed by the state's tourism department. This aligns with efforts to support sustainable tourism and provide convenient charging options to visitors and residents alike.

The PM E-DRIVE scheme, launched by the central government, encourages states to promote electric vehicle adoption by developing charging infrastructure. Given the rising interest in EVs due to environmental concerns and fuel savings, such projects are critical in addressing range anxiety and facilitating the transition to cleaner transportation.

Odisha’s strategy to expand EV charging stations reflects a broader national push to modernize transportation and reduce carbon emissions. The state’s geographical diversity and expanding urban centers make the availability of charging points essential for the practical use of electric vehicles.

By targeting multiple cities and highway corridors, the government aims to create a robust network that supports both daily commuters and freight transporters who may switch to electric vehicles in the near future. This infrastructure growth will also complement other green initiatives and could stimulate local economic activities related to EV services and maintenance.

With the first phase underway, local authorities and contractors are actively involved in the installation and commissioning of approved charging stations. The second phase proposal indicates Odisha’s intention to maintain momentum in the EV sector and ensure the state remains aligned with national environmental goals.

As electric vehicles become more common, the availability of reliable and widespread charging infrastructure is crucial. Odisha’s proactive approach under the PM E-DRIVE scheme positions the state as a notable participant in India’s transition to electric mobility.
