NTPC to Boost Power Capacity to 149 GW by 2032 with Nuclear and Renewables

NTPC Limited, India's state-owned power producer, has announced ambitious plans to expand its installed power generation capacity from the current 91 gigawatts (GW) to 149 GW by 2032. This represents an increase of approximately 58 GW over the next six years, reflecting the company’s commitment to meet the rising electricity needs of the country while diversifying its energy portfolio.

Speaking at the KPMG ENRich 2026 conference in New Delhi, Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, detailed the company’s strategy to broaden its generation mix by incorporating more renewable energy sources alongside traditional power plants. Singh emphasized that the expansion is not limited to conventional power generation but includes significant growth in nuclear energy capacity, which will play a crucial role in NTPC’s long-term energy framework.

NTPC is targeting to reach around 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2037 as part of its overall plan to achieve 250 GW of installed capacity by that year. This nuclear capacity will complement renewable and thermal power sources, supporting India’s goals for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. Feasibility studies for new nuclear projects have been completed in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. The company is also scouting for additional sites across the country to develop further nuclear power facilities.

The company’s expansion aligns with the increasing power demand in India, which has been growing steadily. Singh pointed out that electricity consumption saw a 21 percent increase in October 2026 alone, continuing a pattern of monthly growth. This surge underscores the urgent need for capacity additions and a diversified energy mix to ensure reliable and affordable electricity supply.

Despite global economic and geopolitical uncertainties that have affected energy markets worldwide, India has managed to maintain relatively stable energy prices. Singh noted that the country has not experienced the kind of price spikes seen in other regions. This stability is significant for both consumers and the broader economy, and NTPC’s capacity expansion plans aim to support this trend by enhancing energy security.

NTPC’s strategy to include a sizable portion of nuclear power development reflects a broader shift in India's energy sector. As the government pushes for cleaner alternatives and reduced dependence on fossil fuels, nuclear energy offers a low-carbon source of power that can provide consistent baseload generation. Combined with renewable energy sources like solar and wind, NTPC’s diversified approach is designed to meet India’s growing electricity needs while addressing environmental concerns.

The company’s existing 91 GW capacity comprises a mix of coal, gas, hydro, and renewable energy plants. The planned addition of 58 GW over the next decade will be instrumental in supporting India’s industrial growth, urbanization, and rural electrification efforts. NTPC’s role as a leading power generator in India positions it to drive the country’s transition towards a more sustainable and reliable energy infrastructure.

In summary, NTPC’s expansion plan to reach 149 GW by 2032, with a strong emphasis on nuclear and renewable energy, signals a significant development in India’s power sector. By investing in diverse energy sources and increasing capacity, NTPC aims to address the rising demand for electricity, stabilize energy prices, and contribute to India’s broader objectives for energy sustainability and security.
