SBI Q2 Profit Rises 14.3% to ₹23,038 Crore on Lower Provisions

State Bank of India (SBI), the nation’s largest banking institution, reported a 14.3 percent increase in its standalone net profit for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27. The bank’s net earnings reached ₹23,038 crore, up from ₹20,160 crore recorded in the same quarter last year.

This rise in profitability was mainly supported by a healthy uptick in net interest income (NII) and a notable reduction in provisions and contingencies during the quarter. SBI’s NII climbed 14.7 percent year-on-year to ₹49,143 crore, compared to ₹42,847 crore in Q2FY26. On a sequential basis, NII also grew by 4.6 percent from ₹46,992 crore reported in Q1FY27.

While the interest income showed robust improvement, other income sources experienced a decline. Other income dropped 23.8 percent year-on-year to ₹11,777 crore from ₹15,463 crore a year earlier. Compared to the previous quarter, this segment fell 26 percent from ₹15,923 crore.

Provisions and contingencies, which had weighed on earnings in prior quarters, decreased by 21.9 percent year-on-year to ₹4,217 crore, down from ₹5,400 crore in Q2FY26. Sequentially, the provisions were lower by 16.4 percent compared to ₹5,047 crore in Q1FY27. This easing of provisioning expenses helped strengthen the bank’s bottom line despite the fall in other income.

Regarding asset quality, SBI showed improvement in its non-performing assets ratios. The gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio dropped to 1.39 percent as of September 30, 2026, from 1.73 percent a year ago and 1.47 percent in the previous quarter. The net NPA ratio also improved to 0.36 percent, down from 0.42 percent in September 2025 and 0.38 percent in June 2026.

In absolute terms, the gross NPAs stood at ₹72,529 crore, marking a 4.9 percent decline year-on-year and a 2.3 percent sequential reduction. Net NPAs were ₹18,546 crore, slightly above the ₹18,460 crore recorded a year earlier but below the ₹19,158 crore from the prior quarter. The provision coverage ratio remained solid at 74.43 percent as of September 30.

SBI’s lending portfolio expanded by 18.2 percent year-on-year to ₹51.54 trillion as of the end of September 2026, up from ₹43.62 trillion a year before. Deposits also rose by 12.3 percent to ₹62.78 trillion compared to ₹55.92 trillion twelve months earlier.

The bank’s return on assets (ROA) improved slightly to 1.19 percent, from 1.17 percent in the corresponding quarter last year and 1.11 percent in the preceding quarter. This metric reflects the bank’s efficiency in generating profits from its asset base.

SBI’s performance comes at a time when India’s banking sector is gradually recovering from pandemic-related disruptions. The reduction in non-performing assets and prudent provisioning indicates improving credit conditions and risk management. This progress is encouraging for investors and stakeholders, highlighting SBI’s ability to maintain steady growth amid a competitive financial environment.

As India’s largest lender by assets and market share, SBI’s quarterly results are closely watched as a barometer for the health of the country’s banking industry. The bank’s ability to increase net interest income while managing asset quality and reducing provisioning expenses suggests a positive trajectory going forward.

Investors and analysts will continue to monitor SBI’s strategies for expanding its loan book and managing risks as economic conditions evolve. The bank’s ongoing focus on improving operational efficiency and maintaining strong capital buffers will be key to sustaining growth and profitability in the coming quarters.
