Sensex Jumps Over 950 Points, Nifty Crosses 23,690; Defence Stocks Rally 2%
On Tuesday, the Indian stock market experienced a significant upswing with the Sensex climbing 952.83 points to reach 76,645.61 by noon. The Nifty50 also gained momentum, rising 251.30 points to 23,692.10, reflecting positive sentiment across several key sectors including FMCG, chemicals, and IT.
Investors showed strong interest in shares like InterGlobe Aviation, Shriram Finance, and Nestle India, which emerged as the top performers within the Nifty50 index. The bullish trend was supported by a partial unwinding of the AI-related trade that had influenced global markets recently, allowing other sectors to gain traction.
The broader market indices, Nifty MidCap 100 and Nifty SmallCap 100, followed suit with gains of 0.68% and 0.42%, respectively, showcasing a healthy breadth in market participation. Sector-wise, the FMCG segment led the gains, while pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks saw a decline, indicating mixed investor outlook on these industries.
Meanwhile, the Nifty India Defence index attracted attention with a nearly 2% increase. Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Solar Industries India were among the leaders, reflecting renewed interest in defence-related investments amid ongoing geopolitical developments.
Tuesday also marked a busy day for corporate earnings announcements with a slew of companies releasing their second-quarter results. Major names such as State Bank of India (SBI), National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), Bajaj Finserv, Lupin, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, and many others reported their financial performance. These earnings provide critical insights into sectoral health and investor confidence going forward.
In the mid-cap and small-cap space, some companies made notable moves. BLS Polymers debuted on the NSE with a strong 65% gain over its IPO price, signaling robust investor appetite for new listings. Similarly, SFC Environment Technologies opened with a 7.6% premium, further indicating positive reception for fresh public offerings.
On the other hand, TBO Tek shares dropped nearly 6% following their Q2 results, despite a 12.6% year-on-year profit increase to ₹76 crore in September. This divergence highlights how market reactions can vary based on expectations versus reported figures.
Logistics company VRL Logistics saw its shares jump 14.5% to a 52-week high after posting a remarkable 106% profit increase to ₹103 crore in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 compared to the previous year. This strong earnings growth has boosted investor confidence in the company's prospects.
Overall, the market's upward movement on Tuesday reflects a shift in investor sentiment with positive cues from earnings, sector rotations, and easing concerns around earlier market themes like AI trades. The broad-based recovery after several sessions of selling pressure suggests renewed buying interest on Dalal Street, which could sustain momentum in the near term.
Additionally, the geopolitical environment remains a factor to watch as reports indicate that the United States will mediate talks between Ukraine and Russia in Abu Dhabi next week. The potential for progress in this long-standing conflict may influence market dynamics further, especially in sectors linked to defence and global trade.
As the second quarter earnings season continues, market participants will be closely monitoring results from various sectors to gauge economic resilience and growth trends amid evolving domestic and international conditions.
