Zydus Lifesciences Q2 Net Profit Drops 26.6% to ₹925.5 Crore
Zydus Lifesciences announced a significant drop in its consolidated net profit for the quarter ending September, reporting ₹925.5 crore, down 26.6 percent compared to ₹1,260.9 crore during the same quarter last year. This decline was primarily driven by a sharp rise in expenses, according to the company's regulatory filing released on Wednesday.
The pharmaceutical firm recorded an increase in revenue from operations, which climbed to ₹7,909.6 crore in the September quarter from ₹6,123.2 crore in the previous fiscal year's corresponding period. However, this revenue growth was offset by a notable jump in total expenses, which surged to ₹6,806.6 crore from ₹4,509 crore year-over-year.
Pharma sales accounted for the majority of Zydus Lifesciences' revenue, contributing 83 percent of total sales during the quarter. The company also highlighted strong performances in its formulations business segments. Its India formulations division posted ₹1,884.4 crore in revenues, marking an 18 percent increase year-on-year. Meanwhile, the North America formulations segment grew by 21 percent to ₹3,314.5 crore. This growth was attributed to sustained volume expansion in the base business and increased scale-up activities within the US specialty business.
Sharvil Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences, commented on the quarterly results, saying, "Our Q2 performance reflects strong, all-round momentum, spearheaded by our branded businesses in India, international markets and wellness." He also noted the growing importance of branded products in the US market, pointing out that branded sales now represent 16 percent of the company's US portfolio. This reflects a strategic shift towards a more specialized and differentiated product mix.
Looking ahead, Patel expressed optimism about the upcoming approval and launch of Saroglitazar in the US. This drug is notable as Zydus Lifesciences' first indigenously discovered New Chemical Entity (NCE), a milestone the company views as pivotal in its evolution and expansion strategy.
For the first half of fiscal year 2027, spanning April to September, the company's pharma segment saw its net profit decline by 30.86 percent, falling to ₹1,885.9 crore from ₹2,727.7 crore in the same period the previous year. This trend highlights the ongoing challenges posed by rising operational costs despite revenue growth across core markets.
Shares of Zydus Lifesciences reacted to the earnings announcement by slipping 3.35 percent to ₹1,197.50 on the Bombay Stock Exchange as of 1:25 pm on the day of the release.
Zydus Lifesciences operates within a highly competitive pharmaceutical sector in India and abroad, where companies are balancing growth pressures and regulatory challenges. The company's focus on branded formulations and specialty products, especially in the US market, aligns with broader industry trends where firms seek to diversify portfolios and enhance margins through innovation and niche therapies.
The financial results underscore the complexities of maintaining profitability amid rising expenses, even as sales volumes and revenues increase. Zydus Lifesciences’ ongoing investments in research and development, particularly in novel drug discovery, will be critical in sustaining its competitive position in the global pharmaceutical landscape.
