Nifty Tests Crucial 23,000 Support as Market Sees Seventh Weekly Loss

The Indian stock market faced ongoing selling pressure throughout the week, culminating in the Nifty index declining for the seventh consecutive week. Despite several attempts at recovery, buying momentum remained weak, and the index closed at 23,140.50 after fluctuating within a range of 468 points. Volatility increased significantly, with the India VIX rising 11.41% to 12.69, reflecting growing uncertainty among investors.

This week’s 205.90-point drop, equivalent to a 0.88% loss, highlights the fragile technical condition of the market. The Nifty has been forming a pattern of lower highs, trading below key weekly moving averages, signaling tentative market sentiment. At the same time, the index is nearing a critical support zone around the 23,000 level, which holds substantial technical importance.

Several factors converge to make the 23,000 to 23,200 range a pivotal battleground for the coming days. The lower weekly Bollinger Band sits near 23,071, reinforcing support at this level. Additionally, derivatives data reveal a significant accumulation of put option open interest clustered between 23,100 and 23,200, with notable put positions particularly concentrated at 23,000. This confluence suggests that traders are closely watching this zone, anticipating either a bounce or a breakdown.

If the Nifty falls below 23,000 and fails to hold, it could trigger a fresh leg of weakness, potentially dragging the market lower. Alternatively, defending this support and a move back above 23,400 to 23,500 could pave the way for a technical rebound. Until one of these scenarios unfolds, the overall market outlook remains cautious and uncertain.

The week ahead is shortened by a holiday on Friday and features the September monthly derivatives expiry on Tuesday. This combination is expected to increase volatility, particularly during the first half of the week. Initial resistance levels are anticipated around 23,375 and 23,600, while support is likely to hold at 23,000 and then 22,800.

From a technical perspective, the weekly Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 37.23, indicating a neutral stance relative to price action. Meanwhile, the weekly Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains bearish, positioned below its signal line, suggesting downward momentum. The Nifty is currently testing the lower boundary of its broader weekly structural range.

The index has slipped below the 100-week moving average at 23,376.40 and the 20-week Bollinger average at 23,903.97, while the 50-week moving average remains well above at 24,598.74. This cluster of moving averages overhead is likely to act as resistance, making any recovery effort challenging. On the downside, the rising 200-week moving average at 22,588.34 offers a longer-term support level should the 23,000 mark fail decisively.

Given the current technical setup, traders are advised to adopt a cautious and selective approach in the near term. With seven straight weekly losses pushing the index near a key support area, aggressive short-selling near 23,000 carries heightened risk unless the level is convincingly breached. Conversely, prevailing market momentum does not yet justify broad-based buying. Investors should closely monitor price action around the 23,000 to 23,200 range, especially through Tuesday’s expiry, and focus on stocks with strong independent technical profiles.

Leverage and risk exposure should be carefully managed in this environment. A disciplined strategy with well-defined stop-losses and stock-specific selection remains the most prudent course until the Nifty establishes a clearer trend direction away from the 23,000 support area.

Looking at sector performance through Relative Rotation Graphs® (RRG) analysis against the broader CNX500 index, which covers over 95% of the market’s free-float capitalization, some sectors show relative strength. The Nifty IT Sector Index has moved into the leading quadrant despite easing momentum. Similarly, the Metal and Pharma sectors have also entered the leading quadrant. Additionally, the Nifty Media and Auto indices occupy this quadrant, suggesting these areas could outperform the broader market in the near term.

On the other hand, the Nifty Realty Index has shifted to the weakening quadrant, as has the Nifty MidCap 100. The Financial Services sector has moved into the lagging quadrant, indicating underperformance relative to the broader market. However, sectors such as Energy, FMCG, Infrastructure, and Public Sector Enterprises show signs of improving momentum despite currently lagging. The PSU Bank and Service sector indices are in the improving quadrant, highlighting potential for relative gains.

It is important to note that RRG charts provide insights on relative strength and momentum but should not be interpreted as direct buy or sell signals. Investors are encouraged to consider these patterns as part of a broader analytical framework.

In summary, the Nifty is at a critical juncture with key technical support near 23,000, accompanied by elevated volatility and important derivatives expiry events. Market participants are advised to proceed with caution, prioritize risk management, and remain alert to sector-specific trends as the situation unfolds.
