Gautam Adani Tops Hurun India Rich List 2026, Overtakes Mukesh Ambani

Gautam Adani and his family have surged ahead to reclaim the title of richest Indians on the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026, surpassing Mukesh Ambani's family after a year of notable shifts in wealth. Adani’s net worth climbed 13 percent, reaching Rs 9.23 lakh crore (approximately $96 billion), while Ambani’s wealth saw a 10 percent decline to Rs 8.63 lakh crore (about $90 billion). This marks a Rs 59,400 crore lead for Adani over Ambani, reflecting the dynamic nature of wealth rankings in India’s booming economy.

The Hurun India Rich List for 2026 features 1,810 individuals each possessing at least Rs 1,000 crore in wealth. Collectively, these billionaires hold Rs 187.5 lakh crore ($1.96 trillion), nearly half the size of India’s gross domestic product. The list also highlights a significant increase in the number of dollar billionaires, now at a record 391, up from 237 five years ago. In the past year alone, 27 new billionaires were added, reflecting rapid wealth creation across multiple sectors.

Among the sectors contributing to this growth, steel and metals played a pivotal role in elevating new faces into the top 10 rankings. LN Mittal and his family, owners of ArcelorMittal, jumped eight positions to third place after their wealth nearly doubled, rising 93 percent to Rs 3.39 lakh crore. This surge was largely supported by Europe’s protective steel trade policies and stronger regional steel prices, making Mittal the individual with the highest absolute wealth increase on the list, gaining Rs 1.64 lakh crore.

Similarly, Anil Agarwal and his family from Vedanta Resources climbed seven spots to ninth as their fortune increased by 87 percent to Rs 2.08 lakh crore. The restructuring of Vedanta into distinct metals, power, and energy divisions contributed to the revaluation of their assets. Meanwhile, Samir Mehta and family from Torrent Pharmaceuticals joined the top 10 at tenth place, seeing their wealth grow 52 percent to Rs 1.89 lakh crore following the merger with JB Chemicals.

The 2026 list also saw the debut of quantum computing as a source of wealth. Nagendra Nagaraja, founder of Bengaluru-based QpiAi, became the first entrepreneur in quantum computing to enter the Hurun list, starting with a wealth of Rs 1,700 crore. Artificial intelligence (AI) also emerged as a distinct sector on the list, with 19 entrants holding a combined Rs 3.07 lakh crore. Most of these AI entrepreneurs, 15 in number, are newcomers. Additionally, the aerospace and defense sector reported 23 new entrants collectively worth Rs 85,200 crore.

Young entrepreneurs are also making their mark. Twenty-eight-year-olds Tanay Kothari and Sahaj Garg, founders of AI company Wispr Flow, entered the list with individual net worths of Rs 4,200 crore each. The list itself expanded by 128 individuals over the previous year, now covering 163 cities, including 106 in India. Mumbai remains the wealthiest city with 465 billionaires, followed by New Delhi with 236 and Bengaluru with 129. Mumbai also leads in the number of dollar billionaires, hosting 93.

The average wealth of those on the list increased to Rs 10,362 crore from Rs 9,874 crore last year, with the collective wealth growing at about Rs 5,833 crore per day. Twenty-three individuals have amassed fortunes exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore, accounting for 28.9 percent of total wealth on the list. The largest group, consisting of 1,157 people with fortunes between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 5,000 crore, controls 14.2 percent of the total wealth.

Self-made entrepreneurs dominate the list, making up 70 percent (1,266 individuals) compared to 55 percent five years ago. Industrial products is the sector with the most entries, 166, followed by chemicals with 142 and pharmaceuticals with 136. Industrial products also contributed the highest number of newcomers, 44 in total.

Among remarkable wealth creators is Aditya Kumar Halwasiya of Cupid, whose net worth soared 859 percent to Rs 18,800 crore, accompanied by a leap of 939 positions in ranking. The youngest entrants include 23-year-old Kaivalya Vohra of Zepto and his 24-year-old co-founder Aadit Palicha.

Women’s representation on the list increased to 131, up from 100 last year, with 33 female billionaires. Roshni Nadar Malhotra remains the wealthiest woman in India with Rs 2.79 lakh crore, ranking fifth overall. Jayshree Ullal of Arista Networks is recognized as the richest self-made woman and the highest-earning professional manager, with Rs 77,400 crore. Among new female entrants, Renuka Jagtiani of Dubai-based Landmark Group debuted at 36th place with Rs 70,500 crore.

The number of billionaires residing outside India has grown to 156, including 90 in the United States and 31 in the United Arab Emirates. Rajiv Jain of GQG Partners, based in Fort Lauderdale, is a high-profile overseas entrant, debuting at 125th with Rs 27,100 crore.

While 816 billionaires increased their fortunes, 653 experienced declines, and 219 dropped out of the list altogether. The average age of the individuals listed is 64 years, with women averaging slightly older at 66 years.

This year’s Hurun India Rich List reflects a broadening and diversifying wealth landscape, with traditional industries like steel and pharmaceuticals growing alongside emerging sectors such as AI and quantum computing. The increasing number of self-made billionaires and younger entrants points to shifting dynamics in India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, signaling opportunities for innovation and expansion across multiple domains.
